I still recall the first time I encountered Sacramento’s Death Grips and having to pick my jaw straight off the floor after finding myself entangled in the sheer violence of their rampaging experimental hip hop. It was well over seven years ago, and I Heart Moosiq was a but a baby then. I quickly hopped on the blog to rave near incoherently about how strangely addictive and wildly scintillating they were. And some of the comments were quite appreciative of the post. One fan was glad Death Grips was finally getting recognized for their groundbreaking, trailblazing music. Since then, Death Grips has become a much acclaimed sensation, always pushing boundaries and breaking barriers with their ominous music, described as some as industrial hip hop or digital hardcore. They’re known for being a phenomenal live act, and they’ve had their share of “are they breaking up or not” disputes over the years on venerated sites like Pitchfork and more. Death Grips’ wicked new song Flies lead us into that reverie, and we’re more than eager to share the hypnotically turbulent, visceral heaving track, a corrosive taste from their next album Year of the Snitch. For updates regarding that next full length, you can check Death Grips’ enigmatic site, here.

Though a visionary and inventive item back home in Taiwan, Taipei City based experimental hip hop artist Aristophanes only recently became a known name across the Pacific due to her role on Grimes’ scintillating Art Angels track, Scream. Her unique style and riveting delivery quickly caught the attention of many heavy hitters in the industry. Unexpected as it was, she went on to work with Will Butler from Arcade Fire on her following singles. Aristophanes now returns, sinuous twisting vocals and all, on a fresh new track that sees her re-uniting with Claire Boucher. 人為機器 (Humans Become Machines) is a bristling mesmeric, sinister winding delight. This dark serpentine, soupy chaotic rap ditty is more than fierce. Though even a Mandarin speaker like me needs to concentrate at times to figure out the exact wild contorting poetics that flows out of her mouth, there’s no doubt you don’t have to understand exactly what’s going on to enjoy Aristophanes’ wicked entrancing single. Plus, we get to hear Grimes. 人為機器 (Humans Become Machines) will arrive as a single February 24th via Big Picnic Records.

We are indeed blessed to be on the receiving end of a new sonic gift from Australia’s BLESSED. The forward thinking musician fuses hip hop, R&B, and electronica in a most riveting manner, oft reminding fans of Kid Cudi and Kanye in the process. New song Insanity is a powerfully captivating, viscerally crushing new taste from BLESSED’s forthcoming debut EP. Its future trap production is thoroughly compelling. Dark and grandiose Insanity keeps me at the edge of my seat from beginning to end with its raw, gripping strength.

I’d never heard of choreographer, dancer, director, and artist Parris Goebel till today, but her first song as PARRI$ is without a doubt popping, and her talent game is obviously on point. Apparently, I’ve encountered a lot of her prior work without realizing I had. Parris Goebel is responsible for the choreography behind Bieber’s Purpose as well as a player in plenty of other trending items alongside huge names. As PARRI$, she gives us a whimsical and flashy form of hip hop and trap electronica. Friday is a wildly addictive banger, one that melds Missy Elliott with Major Lazer. Its self directed video is just as dizzy dazzling. Watch below. Friday will be on PARRI$’s debut EP, Run & Tell Your Friends.

[PREMIERE]: FLANCH – Pretty Girl

Nary a week has gone by since a groundbreaking, innovative new project named FLANCH abruptly emerged with a brilliantly edgy avant-garde rap tape. The Indianapolis based collective is building quite a stir with their fresh artistry. Not only do they channel their rife creativity through their music, but they also do so visually, by delivering eye popping videos for their songs. Today, FLANCH has unveiled a stunning new optical accompaniment for pretty girl, the second track off their debut rap tape and my personal favorite from the collection. The razor sharp, darkly jittery song is a haunting, ghostly fusion of electronic pop, hip hop, and R&B, a twisted mixture that evokes FKA Twigs’ experimental music with Arca as well as darkly seductive ballads by Sevdaliza. Its music video, though seemingly simplistic, mesmerizes in an unsettling, trippy way. Listen to and purchase FLANCH’s self titled debut in full on Bandcamp. It’ll take you to a fascinating world of visceral intensity.

I’ve been incredibly excited about this new project FLANCH ever since I listened to an early preview of the project’s avant-garde rap tape last week. Today, the Indianapolis based collective have unleashed FLANCH (stream it in full on bandcamp). FLANCH isn’t just an audio project, it’s a visual one as well, and the first track off the release to receive a heady music video treatment is opening track graace. The jolting tune is a prime example of FLANCH’s savagely rattling and deeply gratifying wall of grimy electronica and filthy pop. graace is a feral beast with the dark complexion of FKA Twigs and Arca, the dissonant grit of Die Antwoord, and the cacophonous muck of Death Grips, all varnished with a thin layer of Kanye West. Watch the ominous video for graace below, and stay tuned for the next video and track off the tape nex week.

Several months back, we learned that brilliant UK producer Mura Masa had launched his own label named Anchor Point, and the first signee to a sure to be amazing roster was a half Irish, half American producer and hip hop artist by the name Bonzai. Bonzai follows up on her first Anchor Point single, KBG, with a head turning, jolting tune named Doses. On the metallic single, she once again reminds me of Tkay Maidza and Azealia Banks but far darker and experimental. Along with the obvious hip hop flavor of the track, you can find elements from both UK house and jungle, plus some of the noisily stabbing dissonance of Death Grips and other experimental hip hop acts. Bonzai will be supporting GoldLink in the UK, and it’s obvious she’s an exciting, innovative act to watch.

Los Angeles alt hip hop act HUNTR blew me away two months ago with their genre defying debut song Veins, which had me picking my jaw off the floor with its extraordinary brilliance and unique sound. Since then, I’ve been waiting for more from the outfit, and they do not disappoint on second single Kindness. The song jolts and jars in a bold Kanye sort of way, but it once again takes on qualities that are not easy to categorize, winding its way through strangely marvelous panoramas of elaborately layered, sweltering sound. Ominously dark and carnal, Kindness slays my every sense with its clamorous arrangement, a cluster of mind melting splendor and visceral vocals. Kindness is electrifying, to say the least. With the new song, HUNTR has also revealed that they are compromised of five virtuosic musicians, three from the East Coast and two from overseas. As one force to be reckoned with, they delive rus a cinematic fusion of alt rock, hip hop, and electronica. A sure to be groundbreaking debut EP is coming our way in early 2016. Kindness is available now on iTunes.

SBTRKT – Higher ft. Raury

September 9, 2014

Wow, wow, wow. That Raury sure is red hot right now. The Altanta alt hip hop artist really turned heads very recently with Cigarette Song. Since then, he’s working with everyone and their mothers on some amazing tunes. In the past weeks, we’ve heard Raury’s collaboration with Vancouver Sleep Clinic, Superfly. We’ve also heard Raury featured on The Neighbourhood’s Warm. Today, he guests on SBTRKT’s Higher, which will be on the British producer’s new LP, Wonder Where We Land, out September 22. The slick track is far more smooth and downtempo than we’re usually accustomed to from SBTRKT, but it pairs blissfully with Raury’s gliding vocals. Is Raury’s the new coveted commodity in hip hop? It sure seems like it…
