It’s been three long years since Canadian group BRAIDS released their last album Deep in the Iris, one of 2015′s remarkably avant-garde and artfully brilliant masterpieces. Though they did release their Companion EP the following year, it’s been a long time since we’ve heard from the art rock trio, so it’s a fortuitous treat that BRAIDS has returned with not one, but two spectacular new tunes, both lush and mesmeric, extraordinary and beautiful. Burdock & Dandelion is a wavy whirring excursion with shades of Dirty Projectors coursing through its whimsical melody and hypnotic vocals. But there’s also a sweet tenderness and a quietude that reminds me of Wet, and an electro-driven experimentalism that evokes Hundred Waters/Nicole Miglis. The song is accompanied by second track Collarbones, a key lavish jazzy piece. Stream Collarbones below. These are songs that literally seem to inhale and exhale, and we do so in sync with them, riding their ebbs and tides, their swells and recessions, utterly caught up in each one’s current. It’s a huge week for Couros, the London based producer and musician who first lit up our music radar last year with Breathe A-gain. Not only was he involved in creating Norwegian starlet Aurora’s huge new hit, Queendom, but now he’s released a scintillating dazzler of an electronica and R&B track named Young, too. Its ornate and dub heavy texture, as well as Couros’ mesmeric looping vocals, are reminiscent of James Blake, but injected with more urgency and vital energy. Young is lifted from Couros’ forthcoming 5 track EP, out this summer. For now, you can stream/download Young, here, while we look forward to more previews from that EP.

Closing out tonight with something sumptuously dark and gothy, which is exactly how I like to end the night. In fact, I’m going to rush home and watch me some Santa Clarita Diet, because that’s the sort of humor I like too, twisted and macabre. Gothy synthpop queen Zola Jesus has given experimental electronic producer Blanck Mass (Ben Power of Fuck Buttons) an inky droning, ominous haunting treatment on a spectral remix of Please. The gloriously writhing track is part of a surprise addendum to his recent album World Eater, a digital only EP named World Eater Re-Voxed that also features remixes of Blanck Mass by Naked, M. It’s fitting that Dutch-Iranian artist Sevdaliza has released another new track but days after I witnessed her long awaited San Francisco debut last weekend. My only other time catching her live was at SXSW a few years ago, where I made it a priority to experience the visionary talent’s experimental R&B and dark electronic pop live. Throughout all these years, Sevdaliza has mesmerized me with her imaginative music, often dark, seductive, tortured, and anguished, as well as her ability to deliver the most unique and riveting visuals. While that SXSW stint at the Sidewinder was amazing, the tiny stage and the bright sun shining in didn’t afford her a chance to fully perform her multi-faceted art form, but the Noise Pop show she performed at last Saturday blew us away fully. A Sevdaliza show isn’t just about her spectacular vocals, or the glitchy haunting production of her music, but it’s about the movement, the emotion, the aura of it all. Try and imagine taking in new single Human Nature live, and you might get an inkling of what we’re trying to describe. The track arrives on the heels of last single Soul Syncable. Ghostly haunting, gossamer and twisted, but dripping with visceral human emotion, Human Nature is as gripping a song though more hushed than usual for this true definition of an artist. Sevdaliza is a performance art goddess, a superhuman vortex which we gladly fall into. You can’t help but gravitate to every voluptuous turn, every sensuous swipe, and every despairing whorl. There are few artists out there, particularly in the electronic scene, who are pushing the boundaries of what’s popular and trendy right now in the scene. And there’s no arguing that SOPHIE is one such artist. She blurs the lines between pop and electronica with songs like It’s Okay To Cry and Ponyboy, but in case you forgot how deep her roots lie in pure electronica, she’s gone ahead and dropped a face melting, raucous clinking single named Faceshopping. Its steely twinge tastes of iron, biting and sharp, stringent and harsh. But in case you think these words sound unpleasant to your ears, dive into the tumultuous world of Faceshopping and think again. It’s thrills galore as this odd and bizarre,  SOPHIE concoction leaves us deliriously intoxicated. Through it all, cheeky and piquant vocals lead us on a wonderfully disorienting trip. Just their name The Code seems to beckon some somber reverence and hushed esteem, it feels so serious and so defined, so esoteric and mysterious. The truth is, we really don’t know that much about the British duo, and they seem to go on long stints of silence, too. It’s been nearly a year since they’ve blessed us with their mixtape Blue Electronica. So I consider it a fortunate day when a new EP drops and we get to share a new song from the pair. Same People is a viscous swelling, buttery melting, and atmospheric shifting swathe of R&B soul and electronica. It’s like molten metal, creeping into our veins and coating the inner chambers of our hearts with its glitchy rolling synths and velveteen vocals. Same People is an overwhelmingly intoxicating listen. Its glitchy shudders are like aching trembles. It’s lifted from a new EP named Paramount, which you can dissolve into fully on Soundcloud, here. The dark murky journey is suitable for some late night solitude, with the lights turned down low.

I always imagined bear cubs to be feisty little fur balls (with sharp teeth and claws, no less), but we also know from extensive experience that London based producer Bearcubs’ sound is quite the opposite of those preconceptions. His electronica and soul is dreamy and syrupy, ridged and textured, like James Blake’s post-dubstep fused with Tom Misch jazzy electro-soul and Mount Kimbie’s glitchy electronica. We get a prime exhibit of his musical prowess on intoxicating new single Landslide, the second song revealed from his forthcoming debut album Ultraviolet, due out March 2nd. The dub heavy, heady hypnotic track takes us on a voyage of late night introspection, drizzled with dusky beats and taut strings. Pre-order Bearcubs’ new album, here. Whoa, hold up! Stop everything you’re doing, whatever it is, as long as it’s safe to do so. New James Blake literally JUST dropped, and I happened to catch the British musician and producer’s post on Facebook the very moment the song and video saw the light of day. Ladies and gents, prepare to be bewitched by dub heavy, glitchy burbling, minimalist and atmospheric If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead. It’s a gossamer haunting electronic song, with heady visuals to go along with its shadowy shuffling, pitchy warbling ambiance. Apparently, James shared the song while closing out his BBC Radio 1 residency. You can also stream the new song, here.

Though I’m still rather dejected over the retirement of Swedish experimental electro-pop collective The Knife, I’ve been elated for the past few months over the return of Karin Dreijer Andersson’s other project, Fever Ray, who’d been silent for well over eight years before the sudden release of her sophomore album Plunge. Fever Ray’s strange and esoteric, dark and edgy electropop, much rooted in the macabre and gothic, is right up my alley, and I can’t get enough of Andersson’s new music. Today, Fever Ray shares a music video for Plunge track Wanna Sip, giving us some sinister and eerie visuals to go along with the icy droning, glitchy needling song. Fever Ray also announced a North American tour this week, which concludes in Oakland on May 26th at the Fox Theater. You can count on my presence at that show. It’s going to be a magnificent experience, no doubt. I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of my CD copy of Plunge next month, too. You can grab your own, here.

K Á R Y Y N, a Los Angeles based artist who originally hails from Aleppo, Syria, brings us into a mysterious world with her song EVER, an utterly ethereal and other worldly hymnal that verges into operatic realms, particularly as driven by her exceptional voice. This multi-disciplinary artist, producer, composer, and vocalist reminds us of FKA Twigs, Sevdaliza, Lydia Ainsworth, and Banks on her dark labyrinthian, arcanely mesmeric aria. EVER comes off of her new Quanta 1:11 project, a two song continuation of her ongoing Quanta series. You can stream the hauntingly gossamer second song, Un-c2-See below. Prepare to drift to its ghostly aura and reel under its melancholic yet angelic effect.
