Charli XCX’s Boys made quite an impact this summer. Not only is it an irresistible bop, but its video was a stereotype breaking agglomeration of, well, boys… Not just any boys, but lots and lots of talented artists and musicians, too. In the wake of the tune comes a growing stream of covers and remixes. While we’re still reeling from SAKIMA’s cover of Boys, we quickly fall for Dutch production project DROELOE’s luminous and frothy remix, too. Bright eyed chirpiness intermingles with churning intensity on their playful and flirtatious future trap edit. Stream/download, here.

MGMT’s Electric Feel will probably go down for all eternity as an indie classic. It’s one of those songs I’ll never tire of no matter how many times I’ve heard it’s familiar hooks.  This week, we get a very different interpretation of that song via Berlin’s Nick Talos and satiny Oakland crooner CRW. These “electric feels” are gooey seductive and flushed swooning. Nick Talos turns Electric Feel into a sexy house jam, complete with sizzling brass and a funky plush groove. Of course, it wouldn’t be as complete of a fevered euphoria without CRW’s molten serenade. Grab Nick Talos and CRW’s Electric Feel, here

Though he goes by the name Minnesota, Christian Bauhofer hails from here in the bay. The Berkeley based DJ and producer has given alt hip hop and R&B duo THEY. a visceral pumping, torrid hypnotic remix treatment. THEY.’s Motley Crew goes deep house on Minnesota’s gritty driving, punchy jabbing edit. The remix is sensuous jolting and salacious intoxicating. You might recall that a flood of Motley Crew remixes arrived on our plates near the beginning of the year. This late comer might very well be the best out of all of them. Download Minnesota’s remix for free, here.

My heart leapt in joy when I first saw the news that Australian duo Strange Talk had revealed a new song, but I was absolutely befuddled when I listened to

Y.O.U.N.G.H.E.A.R.T.S. You see, this splendid tune was originally on the band’s album Cast Away a few years ago. In fact, it was one of my favorite cuts off the record and it later lead to a fantastic remix by The Chainsmokers, too. It seems the duo have decided to re-release the song. I’m not one to complain. After all,

Y.O.U.N.G.H.E.A.R.T.S. is a prismatic bright electronic gem, and its vibrant future hued production will surely win over many new fans in a day and age when producers like Gryffin, The Chainsmokers, Louis The Child, and so many others are loved for similar sounds. The track can be purchased from various outlets, here. As previously mentioned, Strange Talk underwent a metamorphosis of sorts since Cast Away, and the once four member band is now a duo more focused on the electronic end of the music spectrum. We greatly look forward in hearing more from Strange Talk’s evolution.

San Francisco producer Andrew Luce previously teamed up with East Coast singer Chelsea Cutler on a bewitching future bass and chill trap song named When To Love You. They team up anew on a gorgeous new original named Up To You, but this time along, they also bring along Hawaiian production act graves. Together, the trio deliver a cool and airy pool of progressive pop, future bass, and indie dance. Up To You, which debuts under new collective Daruma, is sprightly ethereal, a moonlit twinkler with honeydew vocals. Purchase the wistful gem from various outlets, here.

This one’s an obvious must re-visit. Not a moment’s hesitation crept into my mind when the music video for RÜFÜS DU SOL’s Say A Prayer appeared in front of my eyes. The much revered Australian electronic act had just released a much lauded sophomore album this past Friday, and though Bloom is somehow taking its time to arrive on my doorstep, I’m comforted by the fact that I get to watch this beautiful music video for the sleek and soulful synthpop song. Its breathtaking forest set visuals and vibrant pastels add to the already dramatic level of captivated bliss that the lulling song leaves me engulfed in. Head over to Sweat It Out to pre-order Bloom if you haven’t done so yet.

I’ll finish up with some more electronic music for now. Rapidly rising Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth is really making a name for himself lately. Here’s a super effing sweet, shimmering, sometimes glitchy, sometimes choppy/screwy, always beautiful 47 minute Fader mix he made for The Fader that covers a huge range of music and artists. Just LOOK at the tracklist below. He told The Fader “It’s kind of a sad mix. I had post-Paris depression”. Umm. I don’t mind, Ryan. Not to be selfish, yanno. Not at all.

Here’s another must share remix for the day. What do you get when you cross English dance punk/rock band Foals with synthpop act Hot Chip? Well, listen to this Hot Chip remix of Foals’ My Number. My Number is already the most synth pop and dance ready track I’ve ever heard from Foals. It’s likely one of catchiest tracks of late. Hot Chip makes it more spacey and new wave-y. Nommy.

Short Stories

January 5, 2013

UK electronic producers Sampha and Koreless joined forces to form Short Stories. Together, they previewed debut track On The Way, a glitchy, minimalist, post-dubstep track. The song will be available from Young Turks as a 12" limited release (500 only). Both producers have done incredible jobs on other projects separate of each other. Most people would recognize Sampha for his memorable, incredible work with SBTRKT on SBTRKT’s 2011 album. It’s no surprise that Sampha and Koreless can create such atmospheric, shadowy, mesmerizing music together.
