As ominous as the future may seem right now here in America, I can never resist deliciously dark electronica. Even as a gloom settles upon us and disaster lurks precipitously over the horizon, I can’t help but delight in the sinister trap and witch house-esque wavy electronica on murky simmering Desolate. UK producer SIDEWALKS AND SKELETONS links up with Colorado’s Brothel on this heavy whirring haunter. Instead of leaving me desolate, I find myself comforted and consoled. A need in me grows for more of SIDEWALK AND SKELETONS’ crepuscular electronic music, so let’s dive into morbidly entitled Drowning below. This one’s a slow trawling, introspective quivering treat. Desolate is a free download, here, and Drowning can be downloaded, ” target=”_blank”>here. SIDEWALKS AND SKELETONS leaves me in such a wicked mood that the only proper way to follow up these jams is to watch the new episode of American Horror Story. And by that, I mean the actual television series, not what’s unfurled in our nations’ politics this week.

The Code gave me one of the most mind blowing, jaw dropping music moments of the day, by giving us a ridiculously brilliant re-working of Justin Timberlake’s Blue Ocean Floor. The UK based production duo turn JT’s song into a chilling spellbinder. It’s a sparse yet regal re-make that goes full on dark and ghostly. Yet, there’s also a tempestuous anguish and sensual, lustful heat that surfaces with the song’s urgent pulsing and passionate vocal chops. The massive re-imagining takes the song to The Weeknd like regions, but with a haunting ambiance magnified a hundred fold. The Coda quip: “Imagine you were drowning.” Imagining is a snap when listening to their Blue Ocean Floor, with its suffocating weight and smothering bass. Blue Ocean Floor is a free download on Soundcloud.

San Diego’s Carlos Serrano is proving himself to be quite the masterful mash up extraordinaire. I last featured his Nas and Flume mashup Made You Hold On, but now, he tears back onto IHM with this spectacular remix, Thugz Drowning. Who does he meld together on the sick tune? None other than 2Pac and Banks. Uh-huh. You read that right. And he’s worked wonders blending the two together. 2Pac’s rapping and Banks’ dark, smoky electropop somehow go hand in hand in a husky, fierce partnership.

Los Angeles electropop and R&B songstress goddess BANKS’ Drowning has been remixed by many amazing producers. Though it hasn’t been remixed quite as much as certain other tracks lately (ie. ZHU’s Faded, Charli XCX’s Boom Clap, FtP’s Best Friend), it’s up there in the crowded mix. Yet, like those other songs, jaw dropping versions that sound miles away from each other keep coming at us. Today, BANKS shared this splendid remix by British producer Tom Demac, who somehow accentuates the haunting darkness of the song even more, while also giving it some very Jai Paul like roaring funk guitar.

So, I literally woke up to this, at the top of my feed. Or rather, I was brushing my teeth, saw it, and gasped, with a mouth full of toothpaste. Glass Animals is one of my favorite UK acts of the year, and BANKS has been mesmerizing us all since last year with her music, her latest track Drowning being no different with its haunting electro R&B goodness. Drowning has been remixed by Dave from Glass Animals, who gives it some of their signature trip hop and experimental production. I never thought to put the two together, but BANKS’ sultry, smoky vocals and Glass Animals’ always sexy spin on the dark electronic production go together like they were meant to be. It leaves me hoping they’d collaborate on an original song together in the future. If you haven’t gotten on Glass Animals’ recent debut album Zaba yet, it’s quite spectacular, through and through. I can totally hear BANKS’ style meshing with some of the tracks on Zaba.

Lido, Lido, Lido. Does the Norwegian producer ever stop creating amazing music for our listening pleasure? I’m certainly not complaining. After last week’s remix of Bastille’s Bad Blood, Lido’s back again. This time, he’s remixed Los Angeles R&B goddess BANKS’ haunting, passionate Drowning. I’ve come to expect nothing short of amazing when it comes to Lido. Sure enough, we get his usual lurchy pitch shifting, shimmering future beats, and intoxicating atmosphere. Lido’s EP, I Love You, comes out on June 23. Revisit Money below, if you want an original taste from the production wizard off said EP.

OFFICIAL VID: BANKS – Drowning

June 6, 2014

The video for BANKS’ Drowning has been floating around for a few days now on various mediums, but I’m such a huge fan of the alluring Los Angeles musician that now that the video’s available on YouTube, I have to share it. It’s been a whirlwind of a past year for the rising electronic pop and R&B diva, having collaborated with so many amazing producers on so many amazing, haunting tunes. Do I even have to mention all the insane remixes of BANKS songs we’ve heard, as well? BANKS’ fittingly titled debut album Goddess finally drops on September 9. via Harvest Records. That’s going to be one huge album this fall.
