Closing out tonight with something sumptuously dark and gothy, which is exactly how I like to end the night. In fact, I’m going to rush home and watch me some Santa Clarita Diet, because that’s the sort of humor I like too, twisted and macabre. Gothy synthpop queen Zola Jesus has given experimental electronic producer Blanck Mass (Ben Power of Fuck Buttons) an inky droning, ominous haunting treatment on a spectral remix of Please. The gloriously writhing track is part of a surprise addendum to his recent album World Eater, a digital only EP named World Eater Re-Voxed that also features remixes of Blanck Mass by Naked, M. Lamar, and Gazelle Twin. You can purchase the EP, here.

I feel very fortunate to be living in an age when drones exist. Sure, they could be a nuisance at times, but drones have given us the ease and ability to make jaw dropping music videos and see things from points of view we had no access to prior to their existence. Case in point, the new video that just dropped this week for RYAL’s Charity. Its panoramic scenery was shot in the beautiful landscapes of East Sussex by the song’s co-writer, cinematic UK composer Christopher White. NYC based duo RYAL (Jacque Ryal and producer Aaron Nevezie) offer up the perfect soundtrack for such stunning visuals with their breathy, satiny pop. Charity is a shadowy lurking electropop and glassy sensual R&B ballad reminiscent of Kill J,

Haelos, and Alpines, with a bit of Portishead prowling through its trip hop threads. You can learn more about RYAL and their music on their webpage, here.

It’s readily apparent that I’ve always had a deep penchant for anything dark and ominous, twisted and gothy, but my obsession with such things has been renewed as of late, given the fact that Crystal Castles just released their new album, Chromatics just dropped their long awaited song Dear Tommy, and shows like Stranger Things have brought back a certain interest in classic synthcore music of the 80′s whose roots lie in sci-fi and horror. So when I encountered a remix of UK avant-garde artist Gazelle Twin’s Still Life by experimental electronic producer Blanck Mass (who’s also one half of Fuck Buttons), I couldn’t resist sharing. This sludgy, squishy remix is gnarly indeed, droning and haunting mercilessly, crossing industrial with electropunk. It’s so gloriously menacing, you might want to keep a light on when you sleep tonight. I, for one, will be absolutely fine. I may even re-visit the remix before I go to sleep. Blanck Mass’ remix is taken from Gazelle Twin’s FLESHED OUT remix LP, a collection of “autopsied and re-animated tracks” by 10 exceptional producers. Head to Bandcamp for purchasing.

UK based duo SKIES soar across the, pun intended, skies, with their latest massively sweeping synthpop song, Drone. Make sure you don’t confuse these guys with Australian trio SKIES, because they each dish out their very own style of delicious music. This duo’s radiant pop anthems are crisply majestic and richly addicting, drawing comparisons to CHVRCHES, The 1975, and Paramore. SKIES recently played some dates alongside Coasts, Pixel Fix, and As Elephants Are, and they’re preparing to announce a new run of UK dates throughout March. Drone is the title track from DRONES’ upcoming EP, out January 29th on LAB Records.

New Oneohtrix Point Never

September 6, 2013

Daniel Lopatin’s experimental work under the Oneohtrix Point Never name always amazes me. Every time I listen to one of this tracks, it’s a helluva journey. Add in his cool videos, which I’m sure this new tune will have shortly, and weee… what fun. Lopatin’s new song Zebra is amazing with or without visuals. Just take a listen. Zebra is certainly meant for HQ speakers or headphones. The track takes you all over the place from lows to highs, haunting to the whimsical… It’s surely a work of complex music art. Zebra is off his forthcoming album R Plus Seven, out on October 1.

OFFICIAL VID: LOCRIAN – Eternal Return

June 25, 2013

This beautiful, droning song by Chicago black metal band Locrian is certainly a hazy, interesting, genre blending piece. Eternal Return, while noisy, has an almost post-rock vibe in some of the soaring melodies. The warped vocals mixed in with the slight disjointedness of the eerie, haunting noise rock may also appeal to those who like Crystal Castles or even Death Grips. All in all… I’m totally digging this gloomy yet uplifting stuff. Throw in the creepy black and white video and we’ve got an atmospheric win in my books! Eternal Return is the first single from their new just released album Return to Annihilation.

For some breathtaking, heart stopping ambient atmosphere, drift away with Grouper’s hushed new track Vital. Portland musician Liz Harris really creates a beautiful world with the new tune off upcoming February 4 release The Man Who Died in His Boat. I think I just melted into my seat.
