Islands, the gorgeous first taste from Physical’s debut album Ride It Out, has been remixed by Dntel, who’s also one half of famed legends The Postal Service. The original is a chiffon sheer ambient pop gem from New Zealand based duo Julia Parr and Nik Brinkman, who met in a karaoke bar in New York’s Chinatown. Fast forward several years and they’ve come together to give us a dramatic pop record, due out later this year. Dntel gives Islands a darker atmosphere with his resplendent cascading remix. It buzzes, ripples, and shuffles with vibrant texture, spellbinding us and sending us pitching and yawing with its ever shifting splendor. Physical’s Islands can be streamed in its original form via Soundcloud below.

The Postal Service blast from the past

February 8, 2013

It looks like someone uploaded a 40 minute The Postal Service set performed at KCRW in 2003. Perfect timing for the coming reunion tour and release of their archival album. Is there any other veteran band on the cusp of reunion as widely loved, revered, and celebrated? Rilo Kiley, Dntel, Ben, we’re ready. Take us back to the early 2000’s. We’ve always loved you, and will forever love you. And hey, look! It’s Ben with his old, dorkier hair style! Wow. This really IS 2003.

Time for some moody, dreamy electronic music. Producer Dntel remixed electro popper Caroline’s Seesaw, and it’s a shimmery, bouncy, lush journey. I can picture a hypnotizing music video full of animations to go with the bouncy beat. There’s something retro video game-y in that beat. I like. The tune will be on a remixes album.

Dntel

One half of Postal Service has a new album coming out this summer. And no, it’s not Ben Gibbard, it’s the otehr half, Jimmy Tamborello. Known as Dntel solo, he’s the one who lays down the magic beats. Here’s his song Still featuring Baths. It’s a glitchy, noisy electronic track that bodes well for his new album. It’s quite brilliant and shimmery.
