On November 24, super producer Skrillex will be dropping his Ease My Mind v. Ragga Bomb Remixes EP, on OWSLA, of course. For those not in the know, Skrillex’s Ease My Mind is actually a re-working of DJ Ease My Mind, a song I’ve loved for several years now and one of Swedish electropop act Niki and the Dove’s earliest songs. So, it’s quite glorious that the song has been re-worked and remixed for an EP. The EP boasts remixes by the likes of Teddy Killerz, Skrillex vs Zomboy, GTA, and the ever awesome Jai Wolf. Today, Skrilly gives us a new taste via the GTA Remix, a raging, bass heavy trap experience. While we’re at it, stream Jai Wolf’s remix below, too, which evokes some RL Grimes and HudMo.

By now, I’m sure everyone’s heard about the surprise Skrillex album in some way, shape, or form. The album is titled Recess, and Sonny Moore gave no hint before this morning that he was going to drop a bomb on us. The 11 track album features a long list of amazing collaborators and showcases Skrillex’s burgeoning, growing ability to incorporate different genres into his music. I noticed this over the past year, and at his live show when he did his series of Takeovers quite recently (note to self, pay parking citation from that night, ugh). Instead of sharing the whole thing, as many have done, I’m presenting a few choice cuts that I liked a lot immediately. Above, stream the title track Recess, which features Kill The Noise, Fatman Scoop, and Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit. Seriously, all the tracks are super dope, but these are ones that stood out more from the boundless drops and beats earlier this morning on first listen. Check out the more subtle (as if Skrillex is ever subtle, ha) Stranger below, featuring KillaGrahm. I was also much delighted and surprised when I reached track number 10 and Niki & The Dove’s DJ Ease My Mind suddenly came into the picture. I’ve been a huge fan of that song for like, four years now, and really loved Niki & The Dove’s debut album 2 years ago. They’ve been silent as hell for the past while, and this Skrillex flip of the tune was a real pleasant surprise. Check it out below, too! To stream the full album, head over here.

DJ, Ease My Mind live in studio

August 31, 2012

Wow. I was sharing a few videos of Niki & The Dove performing live in a studio on the Facebook page. But the moment I started listening to this version of DJ, Ease My Mind, I was blown away. It starts out incredibly haunting. It’s beautiful. It’s amazing. Then it bounces right into the album cut’s high energy tribal Swedish pop sound. Love it. They’re one of the bands I’ve been a huge supporter of for close to a couple years now, and just a few weeks ago, they finally dropped their debut album Instinct. It was not disappointing and well worth the wait. I’m waiting for October when I get to see them live in San Francisco. Oh, how I love good Swedish electropop.

Niki & The Dove’s DJ Ease My Mind is still my favorite track of theirs. I can’t even remember how I first stumbled upon the song ages ago when the only video available featured lo-fi, old footage of two gymnasts. I still like that video more than the official video that was released much later. I’ve been enjoying their debut album Instinct very much. So, I have no complaints at all when a new remix surfaces, particularly one by the buzzing, rising Twin Shadow (aka George Lewis Jr.). It’s a very interesting take on the track that utilizes far more of a guitar and strings sound. The slowed down, haunting version is strikingly bittersweet. It unveils a whole other side to the song that was previously lurking underneath the synthy pop beats.

Let’s start with something high energy this week. Here’s the high energy remix of Niki & The Dove’s DJ Ease My Mind by Seamus Haji. It’s definitely a dance floor ready rendition! Yep, DJ Ease My Mind is still my favorite Niki & The Dove track.

Awesome live and acoustic performances

February 15, 2012

I came upon several videos of great live performances, some of them acoustic. These are beautiful renditions of songs, some old, some brand new. I figured I’d wait until near the end of day to aggregate them into an easy listening/watching post. It hasn’t been an easy day to pick and choose what to share. Apparently, Valentine’s Day is a day of stupendous music offerings!

Let’s begin with this acoustic Clap Your Hands Say Yeah performance of Misspent Youth for Bowery Presents. It’s something to drift away with. Loving the cello.

Here’s an acoustic DJ Ease My Mind by Niki & The Dove. This song can come across so differently when approached from various directions. This is gorgeous and melancholic.

For something Northwest emo and perfect for the today, here’s The Lonely Forest’s acoustic rendition of (I Am) The Love Addict from their great album Arrows. Feeling sappy, yet?

And here’s a performance of a new song from talented singer songwriter Meiko fittingly titled I’m In Love. Still love her voice. The track will be on her new album Bright Side coming out in Spring.

Alright let’s get the beat going a little bit. This is the “mellow” version, but it’s still upbeat compared to the above. And I may like this version more than the original. I give you The Sound Of Arrows’ live (mellow) performance of their single Nova.

OH MY GOODNESS, did I just unwittingly put together a short Valentine’s Day lovey-dovey playlist? And it sort of went from bitter and unhappy to wanting to be in love again to being in love. Whoa! Pass me the cheese!

Switching to the electric end of the spectrum, here’s an incredible remix of Niki & The Dove’s DJ Ease My Mind by British dubstep producer Jakwob. DJ Ease My Mind is still my favorite Niki & The Dove track so far (and they still don’t have a debut album out yet), and this Jakwob remix is mind blowing. The remix is contained and controlled, which was a very pleasant surprise. I was ready for some way too hard and heavy, sped up dubstep remix. Superbly done, Jakwob!

OFFICIAL VID: Niki & The Dove – DJ Ease My Mind

December 13, 2011

Wow, they’re really pushing the videos out all of a sudden! Here’s an official video for DJ Ease My Mind, which is the VERY first Niki & The Dove song that caught my attention a good while back (feels like a very long time ago, but perhaps a year or so?). As much as I’m glad there’s a nice, packaged video for the song now, I loved the quirkiness of the old video they had out for DJ Ease My Mind, as strange and odd as it was. It totally reminded me of old Kate Bush videos back in the day, with the oddly choreographed dancing and outfits. I’ll tack on the old video below too. DJ Ease My Mind might be my all time favorite Niki & The Dove song so far… looooove it. But I also love so many of their other few songs. Album album album tour tour tour! Por favor!

Here’s the original quirky video from when I first fell in love with Niki & The Dove. Their other old videos are very unique and eccentric too.
