One of the first things that I noticed when I woke up this morning was a flood of Blood Orange related posts on my Facebook wall. Upon further inspection, I was gleeful to discover that Dev Hynes had suddenly and unexpectedly released an album. I’ve always been insanely fond of the brilliant R&B pop and retro dance music this man puts out, whether as Blood Orange, as a collaborator with others, for film soundtracks, or beyond, so I knew that Freetown Sound was going to be an imaginative and sublime auditory experience even before I tasted any of its songs. Alongside that surprise album comes a music video, too, for album cut Augustine, which features additional vocals by slam poet Ashlee Haze. The song is so dreamy drifting good that I’ve already listened to it countless times over the course of the day. It takes us on a sensory adventure, moving us from neo-soul fleecy softness to early 80′s Madonna snappiness to Jonny Pierce like new wavey dream pop. Augustine is spectacular, and I’ll be listening to it countless more times today time allowing. Head to iTunes to purchase Blood Orange’s 17 track Freetown Sound album, or order physical copies from Domino, here.

I am seriously so excited and happy about Jessie Ware’s sophomore album Tough Love, out October 21. As I mentioned before, I’ve been such a long time fan of Jessie, and 2012 album Devotion was just such a treat, which left me worried whether her sophomore album would be as good as I hope. From everything we’ve heard so far, it’s going to be a superb release, and today’s latest track unveiled only solidifies that ever more. Want Your Feeling is a chic, opulent song, produced, quite obviously, by the always brilliant Blood Orange, aka Devonte Hynes, with its disco inspired grooviness and addictive buoyancy. Blood Orange and Jessie Ware, why didn’t they pair up together earlier? It’s a match made in heaven.

I’m not just a fan of indie music, I’m also a pretty big fan of low budget indie films that focus not on visual effects, but thought provoking plot. One such film I’ve been waiting for quite some time to view is Palo Alto, directed by Gia Coppola and starring James Franco and Emma Roberts. Unfortunately, it may be awhile before I get to see it, since it’s still making the rounds in the fest circuit. You can check out the trailer, here. I read some time ago that the soundtrack includes original music created for the film by the always talented and amazing Dev Hynes, aka Blood Orange. You can hear a snippet of this tune in the trailer, but we now get to enjoy the full song Palo Alto. It’s beautiful. That chorus…. Sigh.

Both genius producer/musician Blood Orange and Brooklyn nu-disco/synthpop duo Holy Ghost! put forth new albums this year that I’d consider on my top 50 albums list of the year. Dynamics and the recently released Cupid Deluxe are great full lengths that will be listened to and remembered for many years to come. So, it’s another match made in my heaven when I saw that Holy Ghost! did a “bootleg”, or remix, of one of my favorite Cupid Deluxe songs, the Samantha Urbani (Friends) featuring You’re Not Good Enough. The popping tune gets an even more club floor friendly revision by the dance floor filling Holy Ghost!.

And now for a dope mashup of the day by, who else, but The Hood Internet! Their latest track is a mashup of Disclosure, Sam Smith, and Blood Orange. It’s called The Complete Latch, and it’s pretty freaking sweet.

Blood Orange, aka Dev Hynes, is one super talented musician and producer. He just released his album Cupid Deluxe, which includes the fantastic You’re Not Good Enough, which features Samantha Urbani of Brooklyn band Friends in a match made in heaven. The match up doesn’t stop there. Blood Orange has remixed Friends’ The Way (which he produced himself in the first place), and it’s an incredible, make you melt R&B treat. Dev adds his own vocals to the update, creating a duet out of the tune. The end result is sizzling hot, and I want Samantha Urbani and Dev Hynes to continue creating music together. Actually… Just get married and have some beautiful babies. You two are way too hot together, at least in your music. Tacking on You’re Not Good Enough again below, because it’s way, way beyond good enough.
