There’s a whole movement astir in the music scene today, involving Asian artists and collectives like Kris Wu, Higher Brothers, Rich Chigga, Yaeji, and more, many of them championed by management and media production company 88Rising, whose YouTube channel has become part of my daily routine. That group of young talented trendsetters also includes Joji, the internet persona who also goes by the names Filthy Frank and Pink Guy. As Joji, he focuses on his more serious musical artistry, breaking new ground with his vaporous swirling, murky wafting electronic R&B. Joji recently released a ground breaking EP named In Tongues, from which comes ‘demons’, a nebulously intoxicating, spectral and sorrowful ballad. Today, he’s released an artistically captivating music video for the song, featuring a lonesome figure in a big fur suit, chained to an empty, desolate swimming pool. It adds to the song’s devastation and anguish. In Tongues can be streamed/downloaded, here. Catch Joji on tour with Higher Brothers, Keith Ape, and Rich Chigga on the 88Rising Double Happiness tour in February. They make an appearance in SF on February 7th at the Warfield.

I had a feeling I’d be drawn to this song the moment I saw its name. Demons is a word that promises dark and haunting, icy and ethereal, and that’s exactly what Amsterdam born artist HOLLAND gives us on her follow up to critically acclaimed Forget Your Name from earlier this year. The ominous and barbed electro pop song is as bewitching as they come, with a dash of Lorde’s early dark pop offerings and some of XYLØ‘s dusky enthrallment. At the core of it all is HOLLAND’s beautifully riveting voice, enwrapped spaciously in a glacial droning synth soundscape. Speaking on the release, Holland states: “Demons is a dark track about a troubled soul who can’t escape – they’ve fallen into a selfish lifestyle that affects people around them. I feel as if I’m trying to give the subject a reality check whilst still trying to be supportive.” You can also take Demons for a slow burning whirl via Spotify, here.

Los Angeles’ SIDI is one of our exciting new discoveries this week. Her dark sensual, moody haunting form of R&B and electropop on striking new single TRIP is evocative and gripping. TRIP’s future bass cinematics and the chanteuse’s smoky seductive voice create an effect vivid and dominating, not unlike a cross between Banks and Flume. TRIP is listed as the first single off SIDI’s debut album Destructive, set to arrive on Midnight Records. For more of SIDI’s rousing dark pop, stream Demons below. TRIP can also be streamed off Soundcloud below, too.

It’s been a year since Empathy Test released the duo’s last EP, Throwing Stones, and in that interim, thanks to Stranger Things and other current trends, the world has fallen even deeper in love with darkwavey electronic pop, particularly if said music evokes classic 80′s sci-fi and horror soundtracks. New song Demons couldn’t have arrived at a better time. The London duo gives us brooding electropop and foggy synthcore on their droopy pulsing joint, which comes as one half of a new double A-side. It’s also the first taste from Empathy Test’s forthcoming debut album. Empathy Test’s double A-side will be out on September 8th. I’m looking forward to hearing the other A-side, Seeing Stars.

You know you’re in for something cinematic when a song starts with the pitter patter of rain and the rumbling of thunder. Hollywood based dark electronic pop duo NGHTS gives us brooding, riveting music on Demons, the first single from their debut album Chrysalis. Demons is a powerfully haunting, emotively charged ballad. The breathtaking song is deeply heart rending, bursting at the seams with urgent anguish. The very demons within me feel like they’re about to burst through the “chrysalis” of my soul, and the prospect seems so cathartic and liberating. Demons can be downloaded from its Soundcloud stream.

I’m sure you’ve heard Imagine Dragons’ Demons before, as it was only a one of several massive hits from the Vegas indie darlings turned international mega star band. You may have even heard the covers of Demons by Jasmine Thompson and Hilman. But how about a tropical, weightless, and blissfullly soothing remix mashup of the covers to delight your senses? Norwegian producer Henry Land teams up with Samuel on a breezy, uplifting re-imagining which combines both covers created by Jasmine Thompson & Hilman. It’s like a heavenly duet featuring both their pristine, enchanting vocals.

I can’t believe time flies so quickly. Yet, I can believe that Imagine Dragons has become one of the most popular rock bands in America since I first started this little ol’ blog over a couple years ago. Too cool and well deserved. Today, the boys released their latest video for debut album Night Visions track Demons. The video seems to be a moving tribute to a victim of cancer. Demons is one of my favorites off Night Visions. But as for overall favorite Imagine Dragons song? That one’s a toughie. I still like some of their older songs the most, but Night Visions was a very well done debut. Obviously. It’s well put together and very uniform in sound, a well packaged debut. You can ask any of my close friends… I was saying for a long time that Imagine Dragons blew me away with their versatility and how different they were able to sound on different songs. I even shared with them live footage of Dan rapping extraordinarily well.  But I also said that they seemed to be finding their sound nook before exploding with a bonafide debut. And that’s exactly what happened. Some of the older songs I love wouldn’t fit into Night Visions. Well done. Oh yea, and best of luck to Dan on the broken wrist recovery!

The National’s Demons

April 8, 2013

Highly respected indie rockers The National debuted a new track today titled Demons, the second track and first official single off their coming new record Trouble Will Find Me, out on May 21 off 4AD. Demons is both rough and tender. It’s a beautiful, raw, introspective ballad. The despondent, moody, intricate track builds up very slowly with Matt Berninger’s deep baritone vocals, at times reminding me of Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst. I found myself liking the song a lot by the time it reached the end. Now, I can’t wait to hear more from their sixth studio album.
