I still recall the first time I encountered Sacramento’s Death Grips and having to pick my jaw straight off the floor after finding myself entangled in the sheer violence of their rampaging experimental hip hop. It was well over seven years ago, and I Heart Moosiq was a but a baby then. I quickly hopped on the blog to rave near incoherently about how strangely addictive and wildly scintillating they were. And some of the comments were quite appreciative of the post. One fan was glad Death Grips was finally getting recognized for their groundbreaking, trailblazing music. Since then, Death Grips has become a much acclaimed sensation, always pushing boundaries and breaking barriers with their ominous music, described as some as industrial hip hop or digital hardcore. They’re known for being a phenomenal live act, and they’ve had their share of “are they breaking up or not” disputes over the years on venerated sites like Pitchfork and more. Death Grips’ wicked new song Flies lead us into that reverie, and we’re more than eager to share the hypnotically turbulent, visceral heaving track, a corrosive taste from their next album Year of the Snitch. For updates regarding that next full length, you can check Death Grips’ enigmatic site, here.

New Death Grips

For all the controversy surrounding Death Grips and their no shows and fan suicide notes and what not, I’m pretty freaking sure these guys have nothing to worry about. They’ve got a strong cult following that isn’t about to ditch them for any reason. The more these guys act out counter culture, the more some people are going to stay devout. On top of that, these guys never fail at breaking ground and thinking outside the  box with their noise rap and experimental music. This has been true since the Sacramento band first started generating mad buzz in the blogosphere. This is still true in their latest track Birds. I couldn’t help but to grin after I hit the play button. Yep. Death Grips are still SICK. Death Grips are still unique and gratingly awesome. There’s a super cool psychedelic factor to Birds. It’s not the bellowy, all up in your face Death Grips of earlier days. But it’s still dark. It’s still sinister. It’s still fierce. And then there’s that odd Duck Grips mashup that was making the rounds this morning. I’m not going to post it here, but go ahead and check it out by clicking here if you’d like. That’s right. Someone mashed up Duck Tales with Death Grips. Definitely a WTF moment of the day.

Holy mother of… Have you ever wondered what universe exploding sound would come out of Death Grips remixing legendary classic The Prodigy? Here you go… Here’s Sacramento noise rappers Death Grips’ remix of FIRESTARTER. Sickness on top of sickness. It’s loud, cacophonous, crazy, and so harshly satisfying! Death Grips’ choice of artwork for the track on Soundcloud is also very interesting indeed. A blue screen of death! Hmmm…

OFFICIAL VID: Death Grips – Lock Your Doors (No Hands 6)

March 21, 2013

Sacramento noise rappers Death Grips confused the hell outta everyone last week with an odd series of mini video clips titled No Hands. They’ve now explained the videos away as a series related to their recent first person recording of their performance at SXSW 2013. As a culmination of those videos, they dropped a clip for their NO LOVE DEEP WEB track Lock Your Doors, which they’ve also titled “No Hands 6”. It’s harsh, abrasive, noisy, trippy, and a perfect example of everything that they are. They never cease to capture my attention.

No Hands videos?

This is bizarre, but I expect no less from Sacramento groundbreaking noise rappers Death Grips. I’m not sure what’s going on with them label wise at the moment since they were cut from their contract after all the drama from before (after they posted their whole album online pre-release), but they’re obviously continuing their little avante-garde march (or rather, rampage) onwards. Today, they released a series of 5 videos titled No Hands. They’re filled with odd home video footage and some as yet unheard of music. It’s kind of eerie and all, but again, what else do you expect from Death Grips? Dark, heavy, noisy, weird, just the way some of us like it. Guess we’ll find out more about this later on! Whatchu doing, Death Grips? What’s this all about???

The Dream seems to have taken a page from many of the popular warpy trap hop artists of late, and maybe even a page from Death Grips, on this super angry new track titled TRON. It’s harsh and angry. Somehow, it makes me want to put on some Death Grips. TRON will be on his coming album IV Play out on May 7.
