Apparently, while I was busy running around like a mad woman at SXSW, Death Cab For Cutie revealed yet another ace tune off forthcoming album Kintsugi. Little Wanderer is yet another piece of proof that March 31st is going to be a glorious day. Hopefully my pre-order will arrive at my desk on that exact date, if not earlier. Scrumptiously moody and mopey, Little Wanderer also carries such driving guitars. In fact, the guitars are borderline twangy. Add in the song’s melody and Little Wanderer might be the most The Decemberists song I’ve ever heard from Death Cab.

Death Cab For Cutie let loose another song from their upcoming album Kintsugi, and The Ghosts of Beverly Drive is making it that much harder to wait for the album’s March 31st release date. The new reveal is an uptempo, bold number with a brighter feel compared to their super gloomy tunes. I’m reminded of some of the songs off Codes and Keys, but more jagged and crunchier. I had the pleasure of seeing Ben Gibbard perform an intimate stripped down show (with Mike Kozelek on guitar) a few weeks ago for Noise Pop Fest’s opening night, and it would have been awesome if he performed this Kintsugi track, too, along with his acoustic renditions of Black Sun and No Room in Frame. But I can’t complain. It was a splendid show.

I’m kind of sad that I didn’t end up scoring tickets to go see Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie open Noise Pop Fest 2015 tonight at the intimate Swedish American Hall. I was too busy the other morning when they made the surprise announcement, and of course, the tickets sold out in mere minutes. I’m sure he’ll be doing some of the songs off forthcoming album Kintsugi, out March 31st, likely including this new reveal of the day, No Room In Frame. Unlike first single Black Sun (which I’m head over heels in love with), this one leans towards some of DCFC’s more simple arrangements, highlighted by Ben’s signature vocals. Entrancing drum work and warm guitars carry the song into lusher regions, but nothing like the explosive, burst of sound and energy that comes from Black Sun. No Room In Frame a far more gentle and tender track, sure to touch many hearts.

OFFICIAL VID: Death Cab For Cutie – Black Sun

Death Cab For Cutie’s new single Black Sun is one of my favorite new songs of the moment. While carrying a more progressive sound that seems to logically derive from past album Codes And Keys, Black Sun mopes in a gloominess that brings us back to earlier DCFC. Melodic guitars work together with electronic elements to create a thoroughly unique and riveting experience. Watch their new video for the fantastic song above, which takes Ben Gibbard on a Hollywood film adventure. I’m eagerly awaiting DCFC’s new album Kintsugi, out March 31st.

There’s no soundcloud stream yet for singer songwriter Jenn Ghetto’s new tune Brunch under her moniker S, so let’s listen to previously released track Vampires, above, first, then segue into a YouTube stream of Brunch below. The Arizona native displays an endearing earnestness on the sentimental, angsty indie rock tunes, which will be on S’ album Cool Choices, out September 23 on Hardly Art Records. Cool Choices is produced, engineered, and recorded by Chris Walla (FORMERLY of Death Cab For Cutie after the surprise announcement earlier this week). His influence is apparent on these tracks.

Reimagined synthy Postal Service-esque version of Soul Meets Body

July 1, 2013

Built to Spill bassist Brett Nelson’s Electronic Anthology Project teamed up with everyone’s favorite emo musician Benjamin Gibbard to recreate some good ol’ classic Death Cab tracks. They’ve recreated two great tunes. The quintessential Soul Meets Body and also the fantastic Champagne From A Paper Cup from even earlier years. If you’ve ever wondered how an more electric take on these songs would sound like, this one’s for you. There’s no stream of Champagne From A Paper Cut yet, but stream Soul Meets Body below. They’ll both be released in early August on 7" vinyl (oooooh hmm). The new version of Soul Meets Body sounds more like The Postal Service or Codes and Keys Death Cab. I like!

Ben Gibbard + members of R.E.M.

Here’s some pretty cool live footage of Ben Gibbards on stage with members (Peter Buck and Mike Mills) of R.E.M. covering R.E.M.’s Near Wild Heaven! The clip is from the Todos Santos Festival in Mexico last weekend.  Hmm. Ben + R.E.M. isn’t a bad deal at all! His voice sounds great with the rest of the members. Gotta find more footage!
