On Sunday night, Twin Peaks made its long awaited return to television, and it’s been as wonderfully twisted and befuddling a ride as expected, if not even more so than its first two seasons now that Lynch seems to have free reign to do as he pleases on the Showtime presented series. Long before its premiere, we learned that Johnny Jewel of the Chromatics would be soundtracking some of the series. In fact, he’s already released surprise album Windswept the other day, which includes plenty of cuts to be used on the series. Chromatics also closed out Sunday’s two part premiere with a beautiful performance of this gauzy swirling dream pop beauty, Shadow. It was a spectacular scene at the iconic Bang Bang Bar, which we’ve associated with legendary chanteuse Julee Cruise for the past 26 years. Johnny Jewel immediately dropped this video after that premiere. The gorgeous tribute to both David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Julee Cruise is pure perfection. Shadow will be on the Chromatics’ long awaited and much delayed album Dear Tommy. Head over to Italians Do It Better to purchase Windswept digitally, or Shadows on 12″, here.

Breaking protocol again by hopping on for another unplanned must share. As someone who’s a huge fan of both David Lynch’s bizarrely twisted Twin Peaks world and red hot Netflix series Stranger Things (in part due to their retro synthcore soundtracks), this surprise mashup of Twin Peaks’ Laura Palmer Theme with Stranger Things’ SURVIVE crafted theme is more than I could wish for. Wistful yet dark, tenderly melancholic yet eerily menacing… ahhh… My day is made. I’m listening to this all day long. Or, I would, if I could. Thank you, Seattle band Prom Queen, for creating Stranger Peaks.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Eggs, bacon, potatoes, pancakes… what’s not to love? But guess what? Breakfast is also a fantastic new band from Los Angeles. Not only do they have the most awesome name ever, the quartet’s debut song Diane is a dreamy, synthy delight. On the surface, I’m reminded of heart warming synth acts like Electric Youth and Young Summer, but Diane carries a dark, off kilter edge that’s deliciously haunting. It all makes sense if you’re familiar with David Lynch’s cult television show Twin Peaks. Oddly enough, I JUST finished marathon watching both seasons of the show a couple weeks ago, so the diner that inspired this song is very much fresh in my mind. Diane captures it all to perfection, with its Lynchian “quirky odd darkness hidden underneath sweet swirly warmth” vibe.

Bastille’s remix of David Lynch’s Are You Sure

November 30, 2013

Man those boys Bastille sure are keeping themselves busy lately. Not only did they just release their deluxe edition of debut album Bad Blood (which included some great new tunes), but they’ve also remixed David Lynch’s Are You Sure. Bizarre, cerebral film director/musician David Lynch and English alt pop band Bastille is not exactly a combo I would’ve thought to pair up myself (despite Bastille’s song Laura Palmer), but this is incredibly good. It embodies both Lynch’s and Bastille’s sounds within its nice little package. There’s a wistful hopefulness in the gliding remix, which includes a newly added layer of signature Bastille harmonies (oh, yes, Dan’s beloved vocals). It’s as dreamy as can be. The Bastille remix of Are You Sure is on the deluxe edition of David Lynch’s The Big Dream, which drops come January 27.

OFFICIAL VID: Nine Inch Nails – Came Back Haunted

June 28, 2013

Alright, let’s jump into it! Big release of the morning! Nine Inch Nails drove people into a frenzy recently with their comeback single Came Back Haunted (most people, some die hard fans were not too satisfied). Today, they debuted the David Lynch directed music video! That David Lynch sure is everywhere these days. Warning to the seizure prone, this one has its share of epilepsy triggering effects. Those prone to motion sickness might want to be careful too. Oh, and those that are recovering from a hangover might want to proceed with caution too. Yep. 😉 Otherwise, it’s a cool, super dark, uber freaky video. New album Hesitation Marks is due to release on September 3! Can’t wait!

David Lynch’s Are You Sure

June 26, 2013

Film director/musician David Lynch has released the audio for yet another track off his upcoming album The Big Dream which comes out on July 16. Are You Sure is a hypnotizing bittersweet piece of dreamy music. Lynch has described his coming album as “modern blues”, and I can see what he’s aiming at here. I’m liking this one a lot. The melancholy within the tracks we’ve heard so far from The Big Dream has been so palpable. I’m still most fond of the Lykke Li collaboration I’m Waiting Here and it’s strikingly simple but strong video directed by Lynch himself. Revisit that one again below Are You Sure and get ready to float away.

David Lynch + Lykke Li!

June 4, 2013

Today, David Lynch announced he’ll release a sophomore album come July 16 titled The Big Dream. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a pretty big fan of David Lynch the director, with Mulholland Drive being one of my top favorite brain twisting mind fvck films. David Lynch the musician tends to confuse me a little more (if that’s possible). Crazy Clown Time did have some cool tracks, including the Karen O collab. He does put forth some very interesting music, but I can’t say he’s one of my favorite musicians. I am eager to hear what he has to offer up on the second release, though. The new album will have a bonus track featuring none other than Swedish artist Lykke Li. That’s some brownie points right there, already! We can already listen to the haunting, lull of a beautiful track titled I’m Waiting Here. This would fit in perfectly in some Lynchian film moment.

OFFICIAL VID: Majical Cloudz – Childhood’s End

April 4, 2013

Montreal’s Majical Cloudz, aka Devon Welsh, released this excellent black and white video clip for his dreamy, beautiful song Childhood’s End. The clip stars Welsh’s father, Kenneth Welsh, whom some may recognize as an actor from mysterious David Lynch television series Twin Peaks. Both the moody song and the somber video are absolutely mesmerizing. The stark ballad is off of coming album Impersonator, out on May 21 off Matador.
