OFFICIAL VID: Damon Albarn – Everyday Robots

January 21, 2014

The genius of a versatile musician known as Damon Albarn sure set the music scene abuzz when he announced a solo album in the works. Everyday Robots will be out April 29 on Warner Brothers, and it will be produced by Richard Russell of XL Recordings. It will also include collaborations with several other talents, including Natasha Khan (Bats for Lashes) and Brian Eno. I greatly look forward to hearing those collaborations. In the meantime, Mr. Albarn has released the first track and video off the new album, and it’s the haunting, whimsical title track off the album, Everyday Robots. The unique video utilizes CGI and authentic cranial scans to reproduce a model of Damon Albarn’s head. Interesting, indeed!

Sure, it’s taking forever for MIA to release her new album Mantagi (hasn’t it been on the horizon for close to two years now?), but the tastes that have trickled from it have been pretty dang interesting and good. The latest morsel is titled Unbreak My Mixtape. Yes, it’s a track, not a mixtape; it is confusing, I agree. The most radical thing about the track is who it samples. Blur. That’s right. BLUR. Unbreak My Mixtape samples vocals and acoustic guitar from Blur’s Tender. It also samples a bit of Carly Simon’s classic 80’s song Why. It’s certainly an intriguing track, though not my favorite off Mantagi so far. I know it’s going to grow on me with subsequent listens, once I get past the “what’s going on?” stage.

Phish’s Trey Anastasio covers Gorillaz’ Clint Eastwood

October 8, 2012

I’m not a Phishhead, but I was very pleasantly surprised by this cover of Gorillaz’ Clint Eastwood by Trey Anastasio and his band for his solo album Traveler. When the track first started, I was wondering what he was gonna bring new to the track. The beginning sounded super similar to the original with Trey’s vocals so similar to Damon Albarn’s. Then the funky, brassy verses by Jennifer Hartswick kicked in and my eyes widened.

Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn, and… Lana Del Rey

September 28, 2012

Ha! You thought you slid by didn’t you? You thought it was going to be a day you wouldn’t read “Lana Del Rey”. WRONG. Legendary musician Bobby Womack has been promoting his new album The Bravest Man In The Universe. He showed up on French television the other day to perform a rendition of Dayglo Reflections with album producer Damon Albarn. Damon Albarn and Bobby Womack is already a heckuva on stage combo. But then Lana Del Rey came along and it became an on stage super combo filled with soul. Stick around after for an interview with the trio that you can only fully understand if you speak French. 😉

New Blur songs

July 2, 2012

If you pay attention to music news on the internetz at all, then you’ve probably heard all the buzz and hoopla surrounding Blur’s new music and all the endless confusion whether Blur is gone for good or if they’re back or what? It’s been quite a mess of news and rumors flying every which way. The other day, Damon Albarn previewed some new songs while performing live, which threw the internet into a frenzy again. It’s now confirmed those are new songs that will be released, though what’s to come for Blur in the future is STILL unknown. They’re probably doing this on purpose to create more buzz, huh? Here are the official recordings of the two new songs with accompanying lyrics videos. Welcome back, Blur. Mr. Albarn, you are one busy, busy man. Under The Westway is a reverie inducing, absolutely brilliant beauty. The Puritan is a more electric and faster paced, playful tune. It’s decent, but Under The Westway > The Puritan by far, IMO.

Albarn’s Marvelous Dream

March 27, 2012

Damon Albarn’s new solo album Dr Dee will be released on May 7. Today, we get to listen to The Marvelous Dream off that album. It’s uber mellow. Listen below. Here’s some description for the new album:

Dr Dee is 18 tracks of songs and music inspired by the life of John Dee, mathematician, polymath and advisor to Elizabeth I. Described by Albarn as ‘strange pastoral folk’, Dr Dee is a fitting companion to the end of another Elizabethan age. The album combines Albarn’s voice with early English choral and instrumentation alongside modern, West African and Renaissance sounds.

Dr Dee was recorded late last year in Albarn’s West London studio and also in Salford with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The album was mixed by Valgeir Sigursson in Reykjavik.

Hmm, curiously interesting.
