Enchanting Danish songstress Oh Land just released her new album Earth Sick recently, which I supported through crowd funding since I’m very fond of her Scandinavian pop music. Album track Head Up High gets a glorious remix crafted by another act I’m quite fond of, Brazil’s CSS (Cansei de ser Sexy). They take the track and give it a very dark and primal edge. It’s a near deep house somewhat Johnny Jewel italo disco flavored indie dance gem.

For a fresh new angle on Kavinsky’s luscious electro jam Nightcall (which features Lovefoxxx of CSS), check out new production act Ardency’s remix. The track was released for free in anticipation of Ardency’s Gradience EP, forthcoming on Prep School Recordings in December. The remix is still very much Daft Punk like with its epic electro house, particularly with the new robotic voices, but there’s also a disco groove and some future bass vibes going on. It’s a blissful rendition of one of my favorite Kavinsky tunes.

Brazilian dance punk outfit CSS have created their own version of the oft remixed, red hot NONONO tune Pumpin Blood, and it’s another great addition to the list. It’s a twangy, busy remix that doesn’t stray far from the satisfaction of the original. The new remix is a special Back to Black Friday Record Store Day release this week. Hopefully I can make it out to get in line at the local record store early Friday to grab some goodies.

bEEdEEgEE – Flowers ft. Lovefoxxx

November 8, 2013

If you didn’t know, Brian Degraw of experimental band Gang Gang Dance has his own solo project in the works. He’ll release his debut full length under the name bEEdEEgEE, SUM/ONE, come December 3 on 4AD. Listen to an edit of album track Flowers, which features the fantastic Lovefoxxx from CSS. It’s a bright, sprightly tune. Listening to it feels like wading through some vibrant, gaudy, and foggy dream.

OFFICIAL VID: CSS – Into The Sun

October 23, 2013

Portuguese dance punk band Canse de Ser Sexy (CSS) has been relatively quiet for a few months. It feels like it’s been awhile since their latest album Planta was released, though it was only June. Planta is a fun album filled with Lovefoxxx’s spunky style and attitude. However, I can’t say that Planta is my favorite CSS album. I’m much more fond of their older tunes and 2011’s La Liberacion. One stand out track for me off Planta was Into The Sun. So much so that I featured the tune on here back in May. The electronic production on the track is hypnotizing and the song takes some surprise turns with its hooky chorus and synth laden bridges.

London Grammar – Nightcall

October 19, 2013

I lagged on sharing the next single off of London Grammar’s debut album If You Wait, because I’ve already listened to Nightcall a gazillion times over. It’s not new to me. I’ve been blown away by it for such a long time already. Really, anything by London Grammar is pure magic. There’s nothing different about their brilliant cover of Kavinsky’s Nightcall, which originally featured Lovefoxxx of CSS as a guest vocalist. London Grammar completely made the song their own. I even quizzed my friend when I first played this for her. During the opening bars, I asked her, “what song is this? You know this!” And she couldn’t get it right away. When the song reached the chorus, that’s when it started sinking in for her. London Grammar’s version is raw and emotional, somber and poignant. The single version of Nightcall is a re-edit, but the differences are minor from the album cut. Hannah Reid shines again with her heavenly vocals. The only thing better than listening to this cover, is listening to it live. It’s a privilege to hear London Grammar live. Trust me on this. It’s a privilege to hear Hannah sing live. F-ing INSANE.
