I’ve been wondering lately what Coast Modern has been up to, since it’s been awhile since the last time they regaled us with one of their breezy intoxicating tunes. As I might have guessed, they’ve been hard at work on their debut record, set for release later this year via 300 Entertainment / +1 Records. They’re also preparing to embark on Alt Nation’s Advanced Placement Tour, due to kick off April 4th. Before they do so, they have some mellow kicking, dreamy swirling alt pop to give us by way of new single Pockets Full Of No. The song is as Coast Modern as it gets with its kaleidoscopic breeziness and laid back charm. Pockets Full Of No also boasts a languid dancehall groove, making it the perfect song to ring in the warmer months of the year. The single can also be streamed off Soundcloud below.

Few bands live up to their names as well as Coast Modern does. As soon as that combination of words surfaces in my mind, I can hear the Los Angeles band’s breezy playful, lush psychedelic tunes right away, blaring from tiny imaginary speakers embedded somewhere in my head. Soon enough, I’ll get to blast a full album of Coast Modern from real, life sized speakers, too! If that news isn’t enough reason to take off early and celebrate, how about a fresh new single? The boys unleash ocean shimmering psych pop and solar powered alt rock on whimsical lurching Comb My Hair. Who needs a comb when a welcome warm draft of Coast Modern tousles our hair? Let your hair loose and lose yourself to that hip swaying bliss. Coast Modern’s debut album will be arriving May 5th via 300 Entertainment / + 1 Records.

The boys from Coast Modern are at it again, stirring things up with their sun soaked, kaleidoscopic jangling indie pop as they present us with new single The Way It Was. The Los Angeles band is extra squishy and jungle frisky on this latest gem. The Way It Was is more psychedelic and electronic than the Coast Modern of yore. It takes us on a rainforest cruise down a twisting, turning sonic river. As we float past the river’s banks, we wave merrily to Glass Animals, Lewis Del Mar, and various other artists who share some similar aural elements with Coast Modern on their latest song. The Way It Was even closes with a surprise ending replete with Major Lazer like trap and moombahton. Coast Modern will be heading out on a North American tour this fall with The Temper Trap.

Coast Modern have proven over the course of the past seven months that they’re indeed quirky alt pop gurus, so it’s rather fitting that their new tune is in fact, named Guru. The slice of summery pop twirls whimsically, a glimmering sea of reggae, ska, and psychedelic pop. There’s plenty of BØRNS candied playfulness on Guru swimming in that kaleidoscopic ocean. The Los Angeles duo were a treat to catch at SXSW, and I can’t wait to see them again when they stop by Popscene in San Francisco on June 10th alongside Atlas Bound and LISS. It’s going to be a splendid night indeed.

A friend tipped me off that new Coast Modern would be coming this week, so I’ve duly paid close attention, making sure not to miss the big reveal. After all, the Los Angeles based indie pop duo gave me one of my favorite debuts of 2015 when they released sparkling first single, Hollow. Coast Modern follows up on that treat with new song Animals, a sun drenched delight that defies the confines of pop. Hints of psychedelia swirl lazily over the song’s synth resplendence as a tropical radiance blankets the song’s infectious melody and groovy cadence, leaving me swaying like a carefree palm tree in a gentle breeze. That’s two out of two, Coast Modern, and my anticipation builds for what’s next! Animals will be available on February 26th. Pre-order, here.

As the final days of 2015 approached, I briefly considered compiling a Best Debuts Singles list for the year, but I soon jumped on a bus and dashed away to SnowGlobe Music Festival and the behemoth task at hand was never attempted. But even in its baby stages, I already knew that Californian band Coast Modern’s debut, Hollow Life, would take one of the top spots on the list. Now, we get to revisit a re-imagined rendition of the breezy indie pop treat thanks to a remix by another emerging duo that I watched closely and gleefully last year. Brighton’s MIAMIGO transforms Hollow Life into a dense and dazzling indie dance gem full of sparkling synths and lavish funk. It’s a dizzying explosion of glistening vitality.
