Cancer is a monster. Los Angeles producer HJMS is no stranger to that as his grandmother, who would have celebrated a birthday this past Thursday, recently passed away to bone cancer. !cancer! is the emotion bending final track off that EP which is available for free. However, if you could donate to Multiple Myeloma Research instead it would be much appreciated. You can donate here. http://www.themmrf.org/donate-to-mmrf/

I’m glad Surfer Blood dropped a new one today, not only because it’s a great taste off the band’s coming third album, but because I also get to throw a mention at the GoFundMe campaign they have going on for good cause. The band from Florida brings tons of their brooding surf sound on Island, much of it driven by the fantastic, pensive guitars on the track. Surfer Blood guitarist Thomas Fekete is fighting a rare type of cancer and he needs help with the expensive cost of treatment. If you dig Surfer Blood, as I do, head over and give him a helping hand, here. Their new album 1000 Palms will be out May 12th via Joyful Noise.

LYRIC VID: Johnny Stimson – Holding On

February 13, 2015

Johnny Stimson’s new song Holding On is an unexpectedly sugared ballad, much unlike the Dallas based artist’s usual funk and soul flavored uptempo jams. Emotive piano accompany Stimson’s tender voice, which has never seemed more beautiful and moving. The gently poignant and stripped down song was utilized in a BUPA TV advertisement (Cancer Survivorship Programme).

Los Angeles synthpop duo Leitbur swept me away with their M83-esque, soaring single Heartsink, a gorgeous, driving, fully captivating gem. Heartsink is a powerful song that makes my heart feel like it’s flying, higher and higher, with every lustrous synth lined crescendo. Leitbur released the spectacular track today as part of a cancer fundraiser. Band member Jaron Widman was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of producing Leitbur’s new album, and though he’s now cancer free and feeling better, there are endless bills stacked up that he needs some support on. Jaron certainly has my sympathies, and I’m glad he’s alright and can also give us such amazing, gripping music. Visit his cancer fundraiser page, here

OFFICIAL VID: Imagine Dragons – Demons

I can’t believe time flies so quickly. Yet, I can believe that Imagine Dragons has become one of the most popular rock bands in America since I first started this little ol’ blog over a couple years ago. Too cool and well deserved. Today, the boys released their latest video for debut album Night Visions track Demons. The video seems to be a moving tribute to a victim of cancer. Demons is one of my favorites off Night Visions. But as for overall favorite Imagine Dragons song? That one’s a toughie. I still like some of their older songs the most, but Night Visions was a very well done debut. Obviously. It’s well put together and very uniform in sound, a well packaged debut. You can ask any of my close friends… I was saying for a long time that Imagine Dragons blew me away with their versatility and how different they were able to sound on different songs. I even shared with them live footage of Dan rapping extraordinarily well.  But I also said that they seemed to be finding their sound nook before exploding with a bonafide debut. And that’s exactly what happened. Some of the older songs I love wouldn’t fit into Night Visions. Well done. Oh yea, and best of luck to Dan on the broken wrist recovery!

Light & Love

March 13, 2013

Vancouver bedroom pop producer Teen Daze put a new track up on his bandcamp today, titled Light & Love. It’s available to buy for $1 and the proceeds go to support Benjamin Curtis of School of Seven Bells. If you still haven’t heard yet, he’s fighting his way through cancer treatment and could really use the support. There are many artists and bands trying to drum up some support for the cause. Don’t just stream the gorgeous, shimmery, chillwave track, help out if you can and head to Teen Daze’s bandcamp!

While You’re Here

October 23, 2012

While You’re Here is a preview off Dirty Projectors’ upcoming new EP About to Die. It’s a string heavy, simple, yet lush, two minute piece. It’s somber and beautiful. What’s really special about the tune is the song was written the day of Gerard Smith’s wake. The late TV on the Radio member succumbed to cancer last year, if you might remember. It was a sad affair, and happened right before they toured for stand out, excellent 2011 album Nine Types of Light. One of the first shows they did upon ending their brief hiatus was the very one I attended in San Francisco. This is a well deserved, moving tribute. RIP Gerard. Love you, TV on the Radio.
