Aside from my first year of existence (which was spent in Portland), I’ve lived in California all my life. It’s a very beautiful state, with all sorts of climates and landscapes.

Montréal musician Aaron Powell, who releases music under the name Fog Lake, certainly captures certain shades of California on his song of the same name. The pastoral California he paints on his folksy indie track is haunted by heartache and nostalgia. California is beautifully sad, a heartrending reminder of intimate trips past golden dunes, across verdant mountains, to pristine lakes. Remember that morning you were the first to wake, and you sat there on a boulder, watching and waiting for the brilliant sun to rise above above the lake? A mist hung over the water’s surface and you wished the moment could last forever, because what seemed so perfect the night before, that clasping of hands, that tender caress, can only lead to heartbreaking despair. Fog Lake’s pastoral charm and bittersweet vocals are reminiscent of early Blind Pilot, enveloped in lush keys and an earnest, early Youth Lagoon bedroom pop aura. California is lifted from Fog Lake’s next full length, Captain, out July 5th via Stack Your Roster.

Just a couple hours ago, we were sharing a mighty fine debut from LA singer songwriter Molly Dewolf named 8 Seconds, produced by BRÅVES. The Los Angeles based trio have obviously kept a very busy schedule lately, because they’ve also released a fabulous new single of their own named California. They leave us swooning with their smooth alt R&B and stripped down pop on the stringy lush, electro thrumming ballad. It’s a gorgeously affecting hymnal steeped in bittersweet regret and jaded heartbreak. “We wrote ‘California’ at a time of disenchantment,” the band shared. “None of us were impressed with the state of things and we needed to express that in song. It’s a break up song to the California Republic. Funny thing is, we’re still together.” Stream/download the song via major outlets, here.

Stockholm based folk pop duo Flora Cash blew both myself and my friends away last month when they played a sold out set at Popscene in San Francisco. They were utterly bewitching, as expected, and I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of their debut album Nothing Lasts Forever (And It’s Fine) in the process. I’d only heard great things about the record, and sure enough, I found it enchanting and entrancing me over and over again after I swiftly popped it into album rotation. Today, the pair has unveiled an official music video to go along with their recent Hypem topping single off the record, California. The video, like Flora Cash’s recent advertising partnership with Mexican telecommunications brand Moviestar (which has had over 12 million views in three weeks), makes quite the moving statement about migrant situations and the tragedies that oft accompany them. It’s a riveting and moving watch to go along with California’s lilting folktronica and folk pop, which carries a bit of that Lana Del Rey smokiness and a touch of Lykke Li’s dark poignancy in its willowy ripples. You can order Flora Cash’s beautifully evocative debut album, here.

How kind and generous of Abraham Tilbury to deliver an ode to my beloved California, and one so stunning, too. The Australian singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer formerly known as Allthingslost makes a phenomenal return with molten R&B soul and gauzy electronica, melting me to the core with silky falsettos and gooey, syrupy production. Despite its nebulous tension, California is a tender caress, and a swaddling embrace that leaves me flushed and burning. Download California for free, here, and purchase from iTunes, here.

The Lagoons is an indie duo out of Austin whose ode to my lovely state of California leaves me lost in a blissful daydream. California is a languorous melting treat with a jazzy groove interwoven into its breezy surf rock and mellow indietronica. The Lagoons’ soft pillowy vocals and their luxurious retro vibes remind me of classic Chicago, but far snazzier and dreamier, with a modern kick and a slight psychedelic twist. A sprinkling of mellow Real Estate and smooth Unknown Mortal Orchestra add to the charm of this chill cruising jam. I bask in its blithe radiance, eager for a trip down the California coastline on a warm summer day. The Lagoons’ California is a free download, here.

I think I have a particular place in my heart reserved for the retro styling of new wave flavored, 80′s imbued, summery synthpop music. I can never turn away from the nostalgic, neon glow of such music, and Sydney’s Nick Pes delivers that in spades on an infectiously hooking ode to an idealistic California, one where the sky is always brilliantly painted with sunsets and epic waves are always lapping at our feet. The bittersweet song carries a tragically wistful undertone. California is the first track revealed off Nick Pes’ forthcoming debut EP.

We’re getting some spectacularly warm and muggy weather here in San Francisco, which isn’t always true of June in this area. It’s a most welcome accompaniment to the start of summer. From right here in the Bay comes an indie rock and garage pop band named Jet Trash, and they encapsulate these hot breezy days quite perfectly with their song California. They remind me of a blend of Best Coast with surf rock acts like Beach Fossils and Surfer Blood on the jangly yet dreamy tune. Jet Trash is releasing their self titled debut EP on July 14th via Burger Records, and I’m more than happy to have found myself another talented SF Bay band to feel proud of.

New La+ch alert! We seem to be hearing a new one from the Toronto based producer every week lately, and that’s something I’m very happy about. The sideways collective artist is, after all, going to release a debut solo album on March 31st, so why not treat us to more intoxicating jams leading up to it? Today’s new one even gets some extra bonus points for being named California. Sultry, summery horns give the track a very sun kissed vibe indeed. Saccharine melody and swooning vocals paint a picture of warm breezes, retro 80′s vibes, and much romance in the air.

Here’s a gorgeous little tune from one Ed Prosek, a indie folk artist from California who’s now based in Brighton, UK. Hold On Tight is a jangly acoustic gem that builds mellifluously in intensity and carries hearts away soaring into the sky with such magnificent splendor. It officially releases on October 5. Following some tour dates in the UK, Ed Prosek will be returning back home for a series of dates, including a stop in San Francisco where he’ll play with The San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra on November 9. Ed will even rearrange his music especially for this unique one time event. Sounds pretty magical, if you ask me. For a some tender California love, stream his song California, which was off his 2012 EP of the same name.
