Birthday appeared unexpectedly over half a year ago with four stunning first tunes, making an indelible imprint from the get go out of Oakland, California. He’s since been championed by tastemakers across the board and I can’t wait to catch the artist when he plays Popscene’s Holiday Dance Party on December 16th in San Francisco alongside fellow local talents SUMif & CATHEDRALS (DJ set). I’ll be looking forward to hearing his new single Parade alongside his four other songs. It’ll melt my heart with its lush dreamy, emotive rich pop, topped off with the singer songwriter’s cottony sleek vocals. Parade’s ravishing percussive rolls  add to the splendor of this effusive sonic march. Head to Soundcloud to re-visit Birthday’s first four songs.

It’s very rare that IHM shares an entire EP, but there are several reasons we’re making an exception this beautiful Friday morning with Summertime. First of all, each and every song off Luna Shadows’ debut record is phenomenal. Secondly, the fast rising Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist, singer songwriter, and producer happens to have dropped the EP on her birthday. And thirdly, did I mention how fantastic all the songs off Summertime are? I’m hard pressed to select a favorite off the four track compilation, one which sees Luna Shadows collaborating with a bevy of amazing musicians like Sombear/Now, Now’s Bradley Hale and The Naked And Famous’ Thom Powers.

From sweet sparkling Cry Wolf to the smoggy glam of Hallelujah California and onward to the burning passion of Cherry and the gooey summer intoxication of Waves, Summertime moves the heart and ravishes the soul. As we embark on an extended Independence Day weekend, a holiday that epitomizes summer in America, Luna Shadows serenades us to great heights of heart rending euphoria with her rhapsodic electronic pop. Summertime is the perfectly timed soundtrack to our summer, encompassing all its highs and lows, despair and hope, heartache and joy. As Luna Shadows describes it:

“Summertime is a collection of songs that shift between melancholy, nostalgia, and hopeful sounds. Everything is tied together with sun-kissed imagery and stark juxtapositions: closeness and distance, light and dark, love and loss, idleness and persistence, dancing and stillness. Each song has a different center, but all revolve around various attempts at achieving a sense of unattainable perfection. The title illustrates this in several songs throughout the EP, the most significant perhaps “ready for your eyes / sweet on the inside by your summertime / like cherry”

Congratulations on a stunning debut EP, Luna Shadows, and happiest of birthdays to you. Summertime is available on all major music platforms and can be purchased from iTunes. The EP also comes with a special digital booklet. Luna Shadows has also announced her debut show at School Night in Los Angeles on August 1st.

New artist Birthday has suddenly emerged from right here in the Bay with four impressive debut songs, all at the same time. Stumbling upon the new Oakland based artist and encountering his songs makes me feel like it’s my birthday today! If you’re a fan of music by acts like Lauv, Troye Sivan, and Seoul, with a plentiful infusion of sun kissed charm, hurry up and bathe yourself in the warm glow of Birthday’s Subtle Love. The song’s swooning crisp and crystalline smooth R&B pop make for a gorgeous and uplifting listen. It raises my spirits when I find new talent from close to home, and Birthday solidifies himself as one worthy of that excitement with his flurry of first songs. Stream his other songs on his Soundcloud, but be prepared to encounter them again here on the pages of IHM.

One of the most surprising remixes to have come out today has GOT to be this remix of Katy Perry’s Birthday…. by HOLY GHOST! ! !? Do I place another exclamation mark at the end, when the first one is part of the band name? Hmm… Anyway, I sure didn’t expect the Brooklyn nu-disco outfit to choose a Katy Perry song for a refix, but here we are, and there it is. It’s as funky fresh and dance ready as we’d expect from the excellent act. Can they remix all mainstream pop music? That would be great, thanks.

Introducing: Royal Canoe

January 8, 2014

Earlier today, Bombay Bicycle Club announced their Spring tour. I noticed that their support band on tour will be Royal Canoe, who I haven’t heard of previously, so, of course, I had to look them up. The indie pop six piece hails from Winnipeg in Canada. Their most recent track is the captivating Birthday, and it comes with a bizarre ittle video accompaniment. Birthday is an artsy, unique song filled with all kinds of instruments, even xylophones. It’s a genre bending song with production that reminded me of eclectic songs by Menomena at times, Ramona Falls, other times. There’s no denying an impressive depth to their music. For another taste of their sound, watch the video for Bathtubs below, a synthy, stringy, yet rocking delight. Both tracks are off their album Today We’re Believers, out last September.
