Last fall, Santa Fe’s Beirut released a much celebrated album entitled No No No, and indie music enthusiasts from all over were much overjoyed. Today, the baroque folk band released a music video for album track Perth, a much synthy and rosy song for the band. The dashing tune is infinitely charming in a way reminiscent of meandering Local Natives mixed with some sanguine Starfucker, but with signature Beirut horns and lushness. The video for Perth would be the second I’ve shared so far deeply seated in magnificent natural scenery. This really calls for a carefree visit to the beach and some playful imitation of the dancing in the video once the weather clears up more.

Another band I’m incredibly happy to have returned is, of course, our beloved Santa Fe baroque pop and folk outfit, Beirut. They follow up on album title track No No No with new charming, Afro beat laden Gibraltar, which they introduce via a simple and endearing music video. It’s yet another delighitfully Beirut gem that reminds us what we’ve been missing for a few years now. Nwe album No No No will be out September 11th via 4AD.

Beirut – No No No

June 2, 2015

I still remember how captivated I was the very first time I encountered Beirut’s music, via some videos on YouTube of the large band playing their music in the most charming, earthy, and magical manner. That was years ago, and it’s been some time since we’ve heard anything new from the Santa Fe band fronted by ever brilliant Zach Condon. Today, Beirut announced their new album No No No, out Spetember 11th via 4AD. I’m sure a lot of people are celebrating this news, and they get to do so while listening to the title track, a gorgeously meandering song that lures me right in yet again with its pastoral folksiness and pensive baroque pop. The band will be touring come summer and fall.

Time to end the days’ shares (for now) with something beautiful. Kishi Bashi’s wistful A Sunday Smile is a spectacular cover of Beriut with extra layers of lush chamber pop. The fantastic strings on this just take me far away. The expressiveness of the always morphing track is incredible. From the romanticism of the lush strings, it moves into the playfulness of a plucky banjo. The artist behind the complex solo act is K Ishibashi, who’s also the founding member of Jupiter One and tours with Of Montreal and Regina Spektor. Obviously a masterful instrumentalist and producer, I can only imagine how he sounds live. Of course, we must listen to the original Beirut song after that. I must say though, I do miss the horns on the cover. Me and horns. Sigh.

This is transcendental. Young Man is lead by Colin Caulfield, an obvious master of indie chamber pop. In A Sense is a track off the last release, Beyond Was All Around Me, in a trilogy of albums by the artist and his band. The song is lush, dreamy, and perfect for those that love Local Natives, Beirut, and other exquisitely layered art pop bands. The album drops on April 9 off Frenchkiss.

What the freak??? I never thought I’d see Katy Perry, Beirut, and Rostam all next to each other. But there’s always a first, right? LOL! Sooooo… yea…. Rostam of Vampire Weekend mashed up Katy Perry and Beirut!!! It’s a mix of Katy’s Hot N Cold and Beirut’s Scenic World. He calls it Scenic Cold. And you know what? It’s not bad at all! Light, airy, whimsical… I kind of like it! The brilliant musician/composer/artist explained: “this is from a few years ago, never released it out into the world, but played it when people asked me to DJ at things, now you can too ; )

OFFICIAL VID: Beirut – The Rip Tide

June 22, 2012

We begin today with an incredible band and the title track off an incredible album. The Rip Tide is as gorgeous as can be from the indie folk band Beirut, lush with all sorts of wonderful instruments (which include, of course, ever delightful horns). The lovely video befits the song with its nautical scenery. I’ve always been partial to the ocean and boats. This video and song just carries me away like these waves.

OFFICIAL VID: Beirut – Vagabond

February 23, 2012

Beirut’s dreamy Vagabond now has a music video directed by Sunset Television. The outstanding song is off of the even more outstanding 2011 album The Rip Tide. There’s something so romantic about Beirut’s music… the strings, the horns… Just can’t help falling in love with it.

Here’s what Sunset Television had to say about the video:

‘Vagabond’ tells the story of a group of soldiers and sailors flirting with nurses and hard-living local girls at a dance. It was shot at the beautiful Warsaw dancehall in Greenpoint and inspired by the look of Milos Forman movies from the 60′s. There were a couple of live chickens on set who were surprisingly easy to work with and natural onscreen. They also tended to shit the moment the camera was on them. With all the smoking, drinking, and advanced pregnancy, the video will probably be banned from MTV, so we hope lots of people enjoy it on the Internet.
