Creating a ton of cover buzz today and likely one of the most obviously perfect match ups is The Flaming Lip’s rendition of Beatles’ classic Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. It’s quite the masterpiece of a spacey cover, and who else is psychedelically fit for the job? I was just musing over Beatles songs a couple days ago and thinking about this song, too! The Flaming Lips will be performing this in their New Year’s Eve show, and I can’t help but be a little jealous of those in attendance.

OFFICIAL VID: Imagine Dragons – On Top Of The World

November 14, 2013

Wee, I just had a surprisingly fun time watching the new music video for Imagine Dragon’s super catchy new single On Top Of The World. For those that give a damn, the music video touches on a ton of conspiracy theories, including stuff relating to the Illuminati, Beatles, and so forth. But most of all, it focuses on the Apollo 11 moon landing, which some conspiracy theorists believe was faked. In fact, some people believe that all the footage was faked in a Hollywood studio, and that Stanley Kubrick of all people directed the thing, hence you can catch references to The Shining and 2001: Space Odyssey in this clip too. Sorry for being all cerebral about it, but as always, there’s a huge coincidence here from a personal stand point (I swear I’m subconsciously clairvoyant at times!). I JUST watched the documentary Room 237 like 3 days ago, which is about Kubrick’s The Shining and many different theories about the messages within that oddball, bizarre, thought provoking film. So, of course, it delved deeply into the whole Apollo 11 fake footage thing and Stanley Kubrick’s supposed role. Of course, a few days later, Imagine Dragons puts out THIS video!

Anyhow, back to the music and regularly scheduled programming. Dan Reynolds does a fine job capturing the exuberance that the band must be feeling right now, being on top of the world and all for real. It’s also very cool that his family makes a cameo (his wife is in super cool rock band Nico Vegas, also featured on I Heart Moosiq in the past).

Wilco covered Get Lucky (AND A LOT MORE)

June 24, 2013

Chicago rock veterans Wilco played a set at Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts, and they decided to do some thing kind of crazy cool. They played a covers set filled with 27 classic and new tunes. There’s a full set up on NYCTaper but their service seems to be temporarily down, so in the meantime, let’s just tune into this fan video of PART of the set. Which part? Wilco’s cool spot on cover of the ubiquitous Get Lucky. This looks like it was LOADS of fun.

Here’s a list of all the covers they went through during this gig. Amazing. I want to hear it all:

The Boys Are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy cover)
Cut Your Hair (Pavement cover)
In the Street (Big Star cover)
New Madrid (Uncle Tupelo cover)
Dead Flowers (The Rolling Stones cover)
Simple Twist of Fate (Bob Dylan cover)
Ripple (Grateful Dead cover)
Who Loves the Sun (The Velvet Underground cover)
And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles cover)
And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles cover) (And Your Bird Can Sing was … more)
Psychotic Reaction (Count Five cover)
Tom Courtenay (Yo La Tengo cover) (with Yo La Tengo)
James Alley Blues
Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks cover) (with Lucius)
Waterloo (ABBA cover) (with Lucius)
(What’s So Funny ’bout) Peace, Love and Understanding (Brinsley Schwarz cover)
Marquee Moon (Television cover)
Happy Birthday To You (Mildred J. Hill cover) (to Pat Sansone)
(Don’t Fear) The Reaper (Blue Öyster Cult cover)
Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young cover)
Get Lucky (Daft Punk cover)
Surrender (Cheap Trick cover)
Color Me Impressed (The Replacements cover) (with Tommy Stinson)
Kingpin
Thank You Friends (Big Star cover)
The Weight (The Band cover) (with Lucius)
Roadrunner (The Modern Lovers cover) (with Yo La Tengo)

While we’re waiting for the full set to become available, here’s the rocking Marquee Moon (Television) cover, an 11+ minute jam.

Anna Calvi covers

December 2, 2011

calvi

Anna Calvi is mad talented. And I love TV on the Radio. I was so happy when I found a low quality film clip of Anna Calvi covering TV on the Radio’s amazing song Wolf Like Me. Now, she’s recorded a high quality studio version!!! Hip hip, hooray! She also studio recorded a cover of the Burt Bacharach classic Baby It’s You (performed by many talents in the past including Beatles and Shirelles). Look at her go on that guitar! I’m looking forward to catching this intense, talented, guitar shredding lady live next week in San Francisco!

And now, I must listen to the original Wolf Like Me from TV on the Radio. Mmm mmm good.

St vincent

This is great, and I’m going to enjoy sifting through it. This page lists all the covers St Vincent has done and counting. Plus, several are with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), and some are with other artists.

Bush at Rolling Stone

September 13, 2011

bush

Bush did a 3 song set at Rolling Stone. Sure is nice to get back to alternative rock, no? Sure is. Sound of Winter is the first single off their upcoming album The Sea of Memories. I guess it’s been a long, long time, Gavin. Welcome back, Bush. And sweet cover of the Beatles Come Together!
