It’s turning out to be a colossal year for many of our favorite surf rock bands. So many fabulous new albums are on their way, including Beach Fossils’ Somersault, an obvious summer must. This week, they’ve released a lo-fi music video for album single Down The Line, a laid back yet bass propulsive twirler. It’s got that bit of haziness and vintage charm that’s just perfect for a hot, summer day, when everything seems bleached out under the glaring sun and the stagnant air is thick with a restlessness spawned from sitting around in the heat for far too long. You can pre-order Beach Fossils’ new album Somersault from iTunes, here, or from Beyonet Records, here, before it drops on June 2nd.

We seem to be in the midst of a sort of “surf rock revival” week. Not only have we been graced by welcome new tunes by the likes of Wavves, The Drums, and more, but Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils surprises us with a new jam today, too! The Year is the lead single from the quartet’s newly announced album Somersault, due June 2nd on Bayonet Records. And it’s exactly the sort of dreamy languid, nostalgic jingling dream pop and surf rock that we’ve been missing from Beach Fossils, whose last album came out in 2013. The Year unfurls with a longing lushness etched out by an intricate array of instruments, including strings, piano, harpsichord, flute, and even sax. New album Somersault can be pre-ordered physically, here, or digitally on iTunes.

What do you get when you combine Holograms’ Andreas Lagerstrom, Wild Nothing’s Jack Tatum, and Beach Fossils’ Dustin Payseur into one supergroup? You get superband The Snow, and a very, very The Smiths’ evoking tune, with a touch of Robert Smith (double Smiths!). The deliciously hazy Memory Loss will drop on Record Store Day as a double A side along with another tune, Joy Of Life.

OFFICIAL VID: DIIV – Doused

September 8, 2012

Brooklyn indie rock band DIIV dropped a video for their awesome guitar filled shoegaze song Doused. These guys have done well with their debut album Onshin, which has great song after great song. Gotta love that fuzzy, catchy, surf rocky sound from the Beach Fossil frontman Zachary Cole Smith. Gotta love the guitars on this!

ALBUM STREAM: DIIV – Oshin

June 19, 2012

For some airy, surfy, fuzzy sound, stream DIIV’s debut LP Oshin below. The album drops on June 26 to much anticipation; previews have sounded wonderful so far. I’ve gladly shared the previews a number of times recently, so I’m excited to hear the album fresh before it hits the shelves. DIIV, once known as Dive, is the side project of Beach Fossil’s Zachary Cole Smith. The dreamy indie rockers hail from the good ol’ center of hip arts, Brooklyn, NY. Lo-fi shoegaze it away, fellas!

Dive is no longer. Wait, wait, wait… STAY CALM. They changed their name to DIIV, it’s just the name that has been retired! According to member Zachary Cole Smith (also known for Beach Fossils), they changed Dive to DIIV because they wanted to be respectful of 1990’s Belgian band Dive. As you can tell from this new track Doused, Dive, er, I mean DIIV, will continue to put forth immensely satisfying shoegazy beach rock with awesome guitars. Doused is a heckuva good one that got my head nodding all the way through. DIIV’s debut record Oshin will release in June.
