We haven’t heard much from French production duo Basic Tape much of the year, and I’d be lying if I didn’t confess how often I’ve wondered what the pair have been up to. Turns out, they’ve been preparing some “cool” funky vibes for us, with creamy South Londoner crooner HUNTAR in tow! Jam out to infectious piano house banger Cool, an upbeat and invigorating, chic and suave club meets pop track that’s anything but “basic”. Hopefully, Cool is a sign of a new string of fine tunes to come from the Parisian duo. Stream Cool via alternate major outlets, here.

French duo Basic Tape brought me right back to my trip to France last fall with their fresh new tune So Good, featuring impassioned vocals by Danny Shah. You see, I had experienced Basic Tape live as they opened up for Odesza at Le Trianon last November, and it was glorious. I’ve since listened to So Good (which indeed lives up to its name) countless times, and I’m gleeful to re-visit it in a newly interpreted form crafted by Sweden’s Tobtok. Tobtok gives So Good a meditative and celestial bounce on his breezy gusting makeover. This is a mesmeric remix I haven’t been able to get enough of since it dropped late last week. The original is out now on iTunes.

It’s an oddly appropriate coincidence that I’m sharing brand new Basic Tape with you today, of all days. Exactly one year ago, I was in Paris, celebrating my good friend’s birthday by catching Odesza on tour at Le Trianon. Basic Tape was the support act that evening, and they were already on when we entered the gorgeous venue. Though Odesza slayed as expected later on that night, Basic Tape’s set felt like a headlining effort in itself. The packed crowd danced ebulliently to their music, and my friend, who had no prior experience with Basic Tape, seemed unequivocally impressed. The French electronic duo take me back to that unforgettable night with a spirited eruption of funk and pop tinged electro this week. So Good, which features UK singer songwriter Danny Shah, fully lives up to its name. Basic Tape deluges us with frisky synths, dashing chords, and a feisty topline, delivering us into the arms of sweet sonic euphoria.

I had a fantastic time visitng Paris last month. You know why? I was there five nights, four not counting arrival night,  and I spent three of those regaling in live music at a bevy of venues across the city. In fact, I closed out my stay with an Odesza headlined show at Le Trianon, which started off just as spectacularly as it ended. French production act Basic Tape opened up the show, and they had the whole place moving in bliss to their music. My friend, who isn’t as widely versed in music as you and I, was thoroughly impressed and delighted by Basic Tape despite having no idea who they are. Today, the duo give us a taste of that enrapturing splendor with their debut single, Not Afraid. The tune is a smoothly luscious disco house and soulful dance pop jam, incredibly hooking and uplifting. It’s hard to believe this is their debut single after all the tracks we’ve enjoyed here on IHM, but if this song and their live show is any indication, their star is about to shine increasingly bright. Purchase Not Afraid on iTunes.

South Londoner GRADES’ electronic tracks are already deeply intoxicating and wicked good to begin with, but now we get this springy and summery remix by French producer Basic Tape. His edit of King has me picturing a monarch that has his hands up in the air, all the while prancing around in a tie dye shirt or some disco garb. Heck, I even picture the Burger King dude dancing around in his crown. Because, uh, I suppose that’s what I’d do, even though I’m not a king or queen. I’d twirl around forever and ever and ever to the endless good vibes on this uplifting nu-disco laced piano house groover.

There’s a crazy, blustery, icy cold wind storm going on outside here in San Francisco that’s halting public transportation, causing power outages, and shutting roads, but you know what? I’m here, inside, twirling around to summery, radiant Bright Side, an uplifting and optimistic nu-disco house collaboration from French producers Mozambo and Basic Tape. Bold horns and plucky, playful guitar punctuate the snappy song, all topped off with airy, divine vocals by South Africa’s Julia Church. No sinister wind storm is going to keep us down.

I know it’s kind of insane, but I have a remix of Seattle duo Odesza’s Say My Name, featuring Zyra, to share with you… again. Considering the sheer flood of Say My Name remixes that have hit us all in the past month, you can probably guess that I’d only feature another one if it were a stellar, noteworthy, ear pleasing pick. Today’s remix comes courtesy of French house producer Basic Tape, and indeed, it is a tasty treat well worth your time. Funky fresh but not over the top, Black Tape’s remix is a refreshing jam.

French melodic house producer Basic Tape has chosen a blast from the past for his latest, fun remix. Who else here was jamming out to Jennifer Lopez’s Ja Rule featuring I’m Real back in 2001? Guilty! I’m Real was one of the biggest hits that year, ubiquitously soundtracking every club, every party, every mainstream hit radio station. And I can’t lie, I loved it back then. I still do! It’s such a catchy track. This funky fresh and melodic update by Basic Space is very much welcome. I can’t help grooving around in my chair to this, I just can’t.
