New Toronto duo Babygirl call their music “emo dream pop”, a description which certainly piqued my interest right away. Their debut single Overbored is as engaging as it is disengaged. There’s a melancholic gloom to Overbored as frontwoman Kirsten Clark sings that she’s “over you” and “overbored” against a backdrop of hypnotic drums and gently lulling guitar. Overbored’s one take music video, directed by David Bedford, cunningly captures the essence of the song. Its subtle choreography and detached mien is a visual manifestation of the dreamy languor and passive emotion of Overbored. Strangely enough, its that same listless, tender woe that makes this melodic guitar pop song so captivating and charming, or in other words, so un-boring. Overbored is the first single from Babygirl’s debut EP, As You Wish, out this July.
