I hope I never get caught in an avalanche, unless it’s this Avalanche of melodic jingling indie rock, from Foresteater, a Phoenix based singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose real name is Mikey Pro. He proves himself more than a “pro” on his new track, a bright whirling, glossy slick slice of lush harmonies and chirpy drums. Avalanche’s ever shifting, endlessly bustling array of fervid vocals and crunchy guitars are irresistibly foot-tapping, head-wagging ready. You can listen to more Foresteater on Soundcloud, here.

It would seem today must be Christmas Day in Grimes world.  The artsy eccentric, brilliantly innovative pop prodigy just dropped a smorgasbord, or a buffet, of videos upon us, and this fan of Claire Boucher can’t be any more happier. Entitled Grimes x HANA’s Acid Reign Chronicles, the videos cover four tracks off of Grimes’ critically acclaimed Art Angels album as well as three tracks from her buddy and collaborator HANA. All visuals were filmed while they were on tour in Europe in a “guerilla style”. Grimes explains that they were captured on a phone, with no crew, makeup, cameras, or lights. Yet these videos are absolutely charming, and oh so uniquely Grimes. Watch the video for World Princess Part II above, then view videos for Butterfly, Scream ft. Aristophanes, and Belly Of The Beat below, followed by videos for HANA’s Underwater, Chimera, and Avalanche

It’s incredible how quickly times flies when measured in music, and I can’t believe it’s already been a year since IHM first stumbled upon a New York starlet named FLETCHER, who proceeded to sweep us off our feet with her electronic pop songs. While singles like War Paint and Live Young Die Free still enrapture me constantly, it’s impossible not to set aside some space in our full hearts for new song Avalanche, too. This avalanche is a flurry of regal marching beats and ardent soaring vocals. FLETCHER gives us one of her folksiest performances on the high flying ballad, and her crystal flawless voice is simply stunning. Avalanche will be on Fletcher’s forthcoming debut EP, Finding Fletcher.

It’s an Avalanche that Billy Fox engulfs us in indeed on his new single… an avalanche of moving R&B soul. The Sydney based musician and producer takes us into a HONNE and James Vincent McMorrow like world of rousing emotion on his richly layered, finespun song. Billy Fox croons with ease on the velveteen ballad, joined by a snappy hip hop beat and some plucky indie rock guitar. Avalanche is this rising artist’s second single of the year so far, and it’s out now on iTunes.

This flowing beauty comes from an EP fittingly titled Cascade, a collaborative project that involes A$AP Mob producer A$AP P and Kansas City artist Soft Lighting. Avalanche emits a glowing radiance as it swirls and ripples warmly, its epic chillwave electronics much different from what you’d normally expect from the A$AP camp. There’s a sweetness to Avalanche, its waterfall of rich synths, pitch shifted vocal chops, and floating cooing combining into a long drink of addictive synthpop nectar. Stream Soft Lightning’s Cascade EP in full on Soundcloud, and purchase from Bandcamp.

I heard this beauty last night on Live 105′s Soundcheck show, curated by Aaron Axelsen with his golden music tastes, and I immediately fell head over heels. Light The Air is a versatile solo side project created by The Analog Affair co-producer Evan Baker, who recently moved to our very own San Jose. On Avalanche, Light The Air brings a melancholic acoustic folk sound both melting and powerful. It’s an earnest song that reminds me of a stripped down but more daring and dashing Volcano Choir or early Bon Iver gem. Avalanche is a spectacular tapestry of sweeping emotion, one that puts Light The Air smack in the middle of my music discovery map. Avalanche is the title track from Light The Air’s five track EP, available on Bandcamp.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles newcomer HANA offered us a crystalline electropop debut named Clay that proceeded to weave a spell over so many of us. The 25 year old singer songwriter continues to expand that hold over us with a glitchy, pulsing second song named Avalanche. She teams up with producer Blood Diamonds yet again on the darkly sparkling and spaciously echoing song, which evokes both Grimes and Lorde, with a hint of hotly buzzing Nashville newcomer CAPPA, too. Avalanche is a beautiful, icy song.

Shlohmo x Nicolas Jaar x Sasha Spielberg

September 11, 2013

Oh, boy. What do you get when you cross the genius of Shlohmo with the talent and sheer brilliance of Nicolas Jaar and Sasha Spielberg? Listen below. Shlohmo remixed Avalanche Just Friends (Nicolas Jaar + Sasha Spielberg). The end result is an insanely atmospheric, shadowy, post-dubsteppy, choppy screwy, warped, mind melting composition with clicketty clacketty Burial and Four Tet like moments. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one late at night.

Alternate version of Zola Jesus’ Avalanche

June 25, 2013

Y’all remember Zola Jesus’ incredible 2011 album Conatus? There were so many great songs off that album, including Avalanche. The Arizona singer songwriter is gearing up to release a new album this year named Versions, and it’s a bevy of different interpretations and arrangements of her old tunes, including this amazing stringy version of Avalanche. It’s absolutely gorgeous and magical. Revisit the original Conatus version below Avalance (slow).
