Annie Hart is one third of beloved Brooklyn dream pop purveyors, Au Revoir Simone, who happen to have just graced the new Twin Peaks series with an intoxicating performance at the Bang Bang Bar at the end of episode four. The musician has announced a debut solo album, out July 14th via Cryptic Whispers. She introduces us to Impossible Accomplice with its first single, Hard To Be Still, which will be featured on an upcoming episode of Netflix series Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts. Hard To Be Still is a punchy dose of wavey synthpop with a garage punk edge. As some are saying, Annie Hart has cut back the layers to reveal a rawer version of the dreamy, misty pop that Au Revoir Simone is famous for forging. This first single is available from Bandcamp, here.

Someone needs to give this band a trophy for best name. And this isn’t just any little band, either. Nice As Fuck, or NAF, is a new supergroup fronted by none other than Jenny Lewis. Together with Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster and The Like’s Tennessee Thomas they’ve unleashed their very first single, Door. People who miss Jenny as part of Los Angeles indie rock band Rilo Kiley will greatly enjoy this mellifluous pop punk treat. It’s spry and zippy, perky and brisk. Door is out now on iTunes. So, I’m curious… does anyone know how nice this band truly is?

It’s always exciting when members from different fantastic bands come together to form a supergroup, though the resulting music isn’t always as spectacular as the stuff from their original bands. Summer Moon’s With You Tonight, however, is an example of when it really works well. Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Spring, Lewis Lazar, The Strokes’ Nikolai Fraiture, and Like’s Tennessee Thomas come together as Summer Moon to dole out a muggy dance rock jangler, heavily imbued with a funking, whimsical groove. It reminds me of Modest Mouse’s more uptempo offerings, but drenched in disco flavored, flushed pluckiness. This one’s fit for a very good twirl around the room.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if Mazzy Star and The Strokes met up in the middle, and then were washed over with a sheen of dreamy pop, this cover of classic Fade Into You is the perfect answer. Brooklyn band Au Revoir Simone offered up the cover, and on it is featured the Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture. Post punk dreamy synthpop Mazzy Star? Why not? It still carries that bittersweet beauty of the original, but with such glorious shades of 80’s new wave. The track was recorded at Downtown Studios this past February, during one of New York’s crazy blizzards. It’s always awesome to hear the music that comes out of these situations, when artists have to hole up during storms.

OFFICIAL VID: Au Revoir Simone – Crazy

September 12, 2013

Brooklyn indie pop act Au Revoir Simone has made a strong statement about how versatile their new album Move In Spectrums will be once it’s out on September 24. Lead single Somebody Who was an intoxicatingly dreamy Phantogram like tune. They followed it up with Crazy, which we heard the audio for a few weeks ago. It’s a bright, warm, fuzzy, beach rock tinged track with a ton more guitars than I expected after Somebody Who. Think Best Coast but far more synthy, far less lo-fi. The whimsical vintage pop is definitely in there, and I love it. I can’t wait to hear what the rest of the album is like. Watch the new video for Crazy below!

Au Revoir Simone – Crazy

August 21, 2013

Au Revoir Simone’s Somebody Who is super dreamy and lush. The dream pop track was the first single off Au Revoir Simone’s new album Move In Spectrums out on September 24. The track already hinted at a new direction for the Brooklyn synth poppers. Now, they’ve previewed another track off the new release, and this one is surprisingly guitar heavy. While Somebody Who had a Phantogram like quality to the track, Crazy has a vintage surf rock Best Coast vibe, but far more electric. It’s obvious the new album is going to be a very versatile one. It’ll be quite the journey of a listen. Listen to Crazy below and revisit the video for Somebody Who below that.

Brooklyn indie pop veterans Au Revoir Simone also released a fresh video today. The clip accompanies their new single Somebody Who, which is a mega dreamy, delicious synth laden listen. Their new album Move In Spectrums will be out on September 24. I’ve definitely been digging this tune since the audio was previewed end of June. Their new direction sounds like a softer, brighter Phantogram.
