Los Angeles based project Luc was created by two good friends who met in high school. From the duo’s home studio, the anonymous two piece creates heart rending music consisting of brooding landscapes that are deeply haunting. Fever Call is Luc’s breathtaking second song, a darkly minimalist electronic & soul slow burner with the heady intricacy of James Blake or SOHN and the bristling trip hop magnetism of Haelos. Fever Call will be on this fascinating new duo’s forthcoming debut EP. Luc also offered up an imaginative cover of Arctic Monkeys’ Do I Wanna Know last month, which you can stream below. Fever Call is a free download here, while Do I Wanna Know can be downloaded, here.

The muggy heat of Arctic Monkeys’ Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High takes an extra sultry and smoky turn on a sensational cover by Miami’s Brika. The cover is the first new material we’ve heard from the songstress in a year, and it’s a much welcome return. The R&B flavored interpretation of the bluesy rock song reminds me of BANKS, but crisper and snappier, in an Alessia Cara like way. I’ve fallen in love with Brika’s voice anew.

London’s alt-rock trio Knites finally treats us to their long awaited and heartfelt second single ‘Could Have Lied’. Their sultry alt sound is like The 1975 meets Arctic Monkeys with a blues tinge. If you missed their other rock jam ‘Leave it Out’ check their soundcloud.

Like I’ve been saying, San Francisco and the rest of the California West Coast has been quite the hot bed of production talent lately. Even many of the producers based in other states originally hail from this area, and many of them are headed back home to the area for the holidays. Count Kuma in to that group, but before he’s back home in Los Angeles, he’s shared a new syrupy treat. Falling For Somebody New is an incredible remix cover of Arctic Monkey’s Do I Wanna Know. Like AM’s material, there’s an intense sultriness and sensual style to the song, but now drawn out in a slow grinding, lustful electro-soul manner. And I bet you thought Alex Turner’s tune couldn’t get any steamier…

UK duo GirlsOnDrugs enchanted their way onto my list of new artist discoveries with their shadowy, haunting electronic and future pop single Party Talk. It’s like BANKS meets Purity Ring, and it’s very eerie and alluring. A few months ago, the duo created a cover of Arctic Monkeys’ Do I Wanna Know?. Find it below, and get ready for a future beats heavy, sultry, solemn take on the rockin’ tune.

OFFICIAL VID: Arctic Monkeys – Arabella

It would be a crime not to share the brand new Arctic Monkeys video today, particularly considering their explosive rise to widespread popularity after last year’s “California-fied” album AM. There’s no question that AM was one of the best rock albums of 2013, and Arabella is one of so many rollicking good tunes off it. The video for the romper just came out yesterday, and today, the viewcount is at nearly half a million. Already. Alex Turner’s sexy good looks can only take it so far, so it’s a heckuva statement about the current state of Arctic Monkeys’ amazing music and how it has connected with people all over. Are they one of the best rock bands of this generation with a long lasting legacy? It’s really beginning to look that way. Of course, long time fans are probably saying “I told you so”.  As one who jumped on the wagon in 2007 with Favourite Worst Nightmare (what an album… love it) and not in 2006 when their debut came out, I’ll save it. I know some long time, die hard Arctic Monkeys fans and I’m not going to step on any toes here.

CHVRCHES cover Arctic Monkeys’ Do I Wanna Know

February 14, 2014

Tons of stuff to share today, I’m going to flood you. You’ve been forewarned. Before I launch into a ton of new goodies, join me in enjoying this cover of Arctic Monkeys’ Do I Wanna Know by none other than electropop star CHVRCHES. As always, they make the tune all their own, making it almost unrecognizable at times with their lustrous synths and Mayberry’s ethereal vocals. It’s so different from the original, that it takes a a few seconds to get used to it, particularly if you’re a pretty big fan of the rocking, simmering song off of Arctic Monkeys’ album AM.
