M83′s 2016 album Junk turned out to be a rather divisive affair. Some fans were absolutely head over heels for Anthony Gonzalez’s playful tribute to many music styles of the past, while others didn’t quite appreciating his sudden departure from his band’s signature tour de force synthpop. You can count me in the former group, and I’m more than happy to re-visit album cut Do It, Try It now that M83 has suddenly decided to release a belated music video for the dizzying, skittering house meets ragtag meets electro disco blowout. The video for the song is a wonderfully creative fusion of live action and animation, which reminds me of SAFIA’s video for Paranoia, Ghosts, & Other Sounds. It’s a light hearted, imaginative visual accompaniment to go with Do It, Try It’s delightful caprice. Junk is available from major outlets, here.

To be honest, I sometimes feel unworthy of the incredible music that graces our ears and moves our hearts. I certainly feel unworthy of trying to find words to describe their greatness. I’m quickly reminded of these restless thoughts by new Vancouver Sleep Clinic. The Australian outfit proves themselves more gut wrenching than ever on new song Unworthy, a prime example of how truly atmospheric and cinematic their music can be. Unworthy’s symphonic grandeur is paired with serrated percussion. One pulls at the heart, the other jabs sharply into its walls. The song is a sensational taste from VSC’s debut album REVIVAL, which you can pre-order from iTunes, here, before it arrives April 7th.

Tessa Rose Jackson is a singer songwriter from Amsterdam with an intricate folk sound that lies somewhere between Feist, Junip, St. Vincent, and Grizzly Bear. Some of you might recognize her voice from the cover offered up by TEEMID a year ago of Avicii’s Hey Brother. Tessa offered up a new cover of Foo Fighters’ The Pretender recently, and with it comes a fantastic animated music video for the track, hand drawn over the course of 3 months. Her cover of The Pretender ferries the song in a whole new direction. It’s an earthy, fiery folk cover, miles away from the original alt rock song, reminding me of some of Alex Winston’s more pastoral, stomping offerings, too. The Pretender is one of my favorite Foo Fighters songs, and I’m loving this new dazzling take on the tune.

Old Hundred is a folk rock band from Columbus with a new full length album, Let In The Light, releasing this Friday on Wide-Eyed. They’ve also unleashed an animated video for pastoral, nostalgia laden album track Casey. The jangly, earnest song carries hints of Fleet Foxes, Wilco, and The Shins. Watch the video below, animated and directed by Kyle Knapp.

UK singer songwriter Fictonian returns with a more subdued second single, Double Negative, a mellow, gentle indie rock song, one quite different from debut single Full Circle Influence. It’s a quiet charmer, honeyed and charming. Fictonian also revealed an adorable video for the song, created by Annie Kruntcheva, a talented flip-book animation artist. Watch the video below, then catch Full Circle Influence below, if you missed it last time. It’s one that lies far more in woozy space and psych rock regions.

OFFICIAL VID: Last Lynx – Lacuna

January 17, 2014

Swedish act Last Lynx dropped an exceedingly adorable video for their song Lacuna. I featured the slow tempo jam recently, but this clip is just too cute not to share again. Lacuna is on the indie alt pop act’s coming second EP Ocean Reels. There’s a delicious gauziness to the slightly lo-fi, sultry, and ever so balmy track.

OFFICIAL VID: Yo La Tengo – Ohm

July 11, 2013

This music video is worthy of sharing just for the visuals themselves, though, of course, the Yo La Tengo song is pretty good, too! Ohm is off their recent album Fade. The music video was created and directed by the creator of The Simpsons, and it’s an adorable, colorful, tongue in cheek clip that has a school of kids dissect who or what exactly veteran indie rock band Yo La Tengo is. I really enjoyed the formula scenes. How much music (song names, band names, artist names, etc) can you glean out of all those writings? Pretty sweet stuff! The animation is by Sugarshack Animation. Good job, fellas! Ohm will be released on a limited edition 12" soon on Matador. Alright, time to watch the clip again.
