Roses is one of my favorite songs from OutKast, if not my absolute favorite. Which is actually kind of odd, because back in the days of OutKast ruling the world, when young ‘uns KNEW who OutKast is, I used to be much more fond of their other tunes. Somehow, Roses crept up to be a timeless favorite. The moment I hear that chorus kick in, it’s like I a jolt of electricity pulsing through my veins. Florida production act PLS&TY douses the classic in blaring, electrifying future bass on a remix that takes Roses to a whole new level of invigorating thrills. Excuse me as I get up from my desk and dance like a fool around my office.

Production duo Peter Brennan & TCUP team back up on an electrifying re-imagining of Outkast hit Roses, a song that made a huge impression on me over the years and brings back much memories. The duo give Roses a huge bounce and plenty of exhilarating progressive house vibes on their remix. As a result of this remix, I’m going to have “roses smell like boo boo-ooo” stuck in my head forever ever (pun intended) again, but this time, with massive bass and radiant synths.

Little Dragon cover Kelis and Andre 3000’s Millionaire

August 22, 2014

Let’s start the afternoon off with a cover, shall we? Little Dragon, who’s due to play a sold out show at the cavernous Fox Theatre in Oakland tonight, turned in a fantabulous cover of Kelis’ Millionaire, which originally features Andre 3000. The Swedish electropop band’s neo-soul electropop style fits the tune well, and I found myself captivated to the utmost by the always incredible Yukimi Nagano and her smooth voice. This is also the first time I’ve heard Yukimi rap, which is pretty dang cool. This makes me regret not making it out to Little Dragon’s show tonight, but I’m planning to hit them up the next time they return this Fall. After all, I got to see them at Mezzanine a couple years ago, albeit while incredibly hungover because it was the day after my birthday.

Moves Like Ms Jackson

March 24, 2014

Making waves and creating buzz on the internet the past several weeks is this mysterious mashup/flip titled Moves Like Ms. Jackson, by an enigmatic Los Angeles producer named ZHU (who released it anonymously, but sleuths have since figured it out). Moves Like Ms. Jackson is an awesome medley that throws together so many of Outkast’s sweet hit songs, including So Fresh So Clean, The Way You Move, Ms. Jackson, and The Whole World. For all the kids wondering who the hell Outkast is after their headlining slot at Coachella was announced… listen up, study up! Then go jam to the originals.

Farrah Fawcett Hair featuring Andre 3000!

June 1, 2013

Mad props to Los Angeles’ Capital Cities on their rise to the top of the Billboard chart! It’s been a heckuva journey. Their debut album In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery comes out next week, and they’ve garnered a level of popularity they’ve deserved for a long time now. Here’s their funky new tune Farrah Fawcett Hair which features Andre 3000 (and narrative by Frank Tavares of NPR)! It’s got its fair share of trumpet flair and groovy beats, as expected from these guys. I honestly cannot count the number of times I’ve caught these guys live now, but every time is just as fun and fantastic as the previous time. They’re one of those acts you’ll never get tired of hearing or seeing on stage. Safe and Sound still gets me going each and every time. Same with Kangaroo Court and many other great tunes by these guys. Some of the funky nu-disco feel of this track falls right in with the popular Daft Punk-ish old school revival that’s exploded into mainstream as of late, though it’s been going on for a good while in the indie scene now, as all us audiophiles know. 😉

Tame Impala covering OutKast?

OK, I gotta say, this is pretty cool. Psych rockers Tame Impala visited the Triple J Radio studios in their native Australia and performed this groovy cover of OutKast’s Prototype!
