This one’s been making the rounds this morning with a whole lot of rapturous praise, and for plenty good reason, too. Ever brilliant R&B crooner Gallant has released episode 6 of his In The Room series. The guest for this one is pop sensation Dua Lipa, and since it’s what would’ve been the late great Amy Winehouse’s 34th birthday, they’ve covered Tears Dry On Their Own. Happy birthday, Amy. The world obviously misses you very, very much.

The late, great Amy Winehouse’s sassy cool Stronger Than Me gets an opulent and lush transformation on a remix by Berlin’s Mogul and French producer Mokoa. They join forces to deliver a Stronger Than Me that boasts bouncy beats and soulful house resplendence, bringing together slick nu-disco, hints of future funk, and plenty of deep club floor bass. If this doesn’t get you grooving, then you’re one tough cookie. Free download, here.

Just yesterday, Amy Winehouse would’ve turned thirty two. Yes, it was the tragic artist’s birthday. Instead, as we all know, she’s joined the legendary 27 club. British electronic act Digital Farm Animals offers up a proper tribute, intentional or coincidental, via an immensely breathtaking remix of Ms. Winehouse’s Stronger Than Me. In fact, this is the ONLY official remix of a song approved by her family since her passing. It’s a near gutwrenching experience, taking into account the lyrics of the song, Amy’s striking vocals, and the melancholia tinged, reflective atmosphere of the track. Digital Farm Animals’ expert adaptation is an ambient electronica, melodic trip hop, and entrancing breakbeat work of art. This leaves me at one of those special music moments where I can’t help but utter “magic”.

Sure, due to personal taste, my favorite Tom Misch tunes tend to be his collaborations with fellow melting singer songwriter Carmody, but there’s no denying how fantastically jazzy, snazzy, and brilliant the UK artist is on his other work, too. This is all glaringly obvious on Tom’s new remix of Amy Winehouse’s classic tune Rehab. The mellow, soulful approach on his remix is wonderfully smooth and warm.

Gin Wigmore

April 1, 2013

In my wide travels on the internetz, I’ve learned about the existence of this New Zealand singer songwriter, Gin Wigmore. She’s been around for awhile and has two studio albums out, with her last one in 2011 titled Gravel & Wine. Seems she’s about to do some stateside touring and promotion, so we might be hearing more about her in the US. She’s already been very popular in her home country. I’m sure some of y’all already know all about her. Gin Wigmore’s fantastic vocals and sassy style reminds me of a cross between Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Kimbra. Her pop/rock music is tinged with spunky soul, jazz, and blues.  Below are a couple recent videos she made for some songs (The Old Queens Head Session vids), and a few additional choice picks I enjoyed.

OFFICIAL VID: Nas ft. Amy Winehouse – Cherry Wine

October 2, 2012

I don’t suppose it’s easy figuring out how to tastefully make a video that features a musician posthumously. Nas did a good job on this, making it classy and retro. Cherry Wine was one of so many buzzed Amy Winehouse posthumous collaborations last year, and it was a deeply satisfying and enjoyable one off Nas’ album Life Is Good. The video for souful hip hop track features some projected images of the late Ms. Winehouse on a brick wall, nothing too discernible and nothing that is overtly indulgent.

Nas X Amy Winehouse

July 4, 2012

Another posthumous Amy Winehouse tune has surfaced. It’s another collaboration with Nas from the sessions they did back in 2008. Cherry Wine will be on Nas’ next album Life Is Good. Here’s the radio rip from the BBC Radio 1 premiere. I wonder how much more unreleased material is out there that involves Amy Winehouse. Controversy aside, it was a big music loss. Cherry Wine is a perfect example why…

OFWGKTA (The Internet) Zeitgeist 2011 mix

January 4, 2012

There’s another Hype Machine Zeitgeist 2011 mix out. The last one was by RAC. This one is by OFWGKTA, or Odd Future, but it’s really under direction of The Internet, which is Sid Tha Kid and Matt Martian. Once again, Hype Machine asked the artists to make a mix out of their top 50 songs of 2011 list. Here’s what The Internet put together for us, complete with epic tracklist below. While RAC’s mix was more fast beats, electric dance and house, this one gives us hip hop, r&b, soul and funk. It’s interesting how both used Lykke Li’s I Follow You, but on this mix, it’s Tyler the Creator’s version.

Tracklist:

1. The Stepkids – Shadows on Behalf
2. Katy B – Movement
3. Curren$y + Alchemeist – Smoke Break
4. Amy Winehouse – Half Time
5. Speak! – Framboise Menage a Trois
6. Toro Y Moi – Still Sound
7. Tyler + Hodgy – Analog
8. Thundercat – Return To The Journey
9. Lykke li – I Follow You (Tyler remix)
10. Kilo Kish – Navy
11. Pyramid Vritra – Urself
12. The Internet – Web of Me
