A band like Freedom Fry releasing a song named Cold Blooded Heart almost seems ironic, considering how sweetly affable and genuinely down to earth the French-American duo from Los Angeles has proven to be in all our encounters with the pair. But that’s exactly what Bruce Driscoll and Marie Seyrat have named their new single, a dusty rolling gem from their long awaited debut full length, arriving this summer. With it, Freedom Fry takes us to the ruthless Wild West, known for its stoic shootouts and its heart wringing escapades. But we feel cozy and safe, swaddled by the LA-based duo’s twangy strumming, bucolic stirring song. They’ve given us a heartfelt reminder to look to the future after surviving the past. Cold Blooded Heart is that welcome hearth, that dependable log cabin we return to after a long day out in the barren wilderness under a brutal sun. Our hearts may be beaten and mangled, but we’re lifted by Freedom Fry’s harmonious vocals, their beautifully lush strings, and an overwhelming sense of weathered contentment. “Make a fire, put it in your heart, I won’t let you go, I’ll make you whole again,” they coo. Freedom Fry’s debut album Classic drops on June 1st. Re-visit the title track via our feature, here.

This bucolic gem was a chance encounter, a random discovery, and it’s surely sign of some good music karma. Steam is a rustically drifting indie rock debut from a project named Holy Andromeda, a mysterious new act based in New York. The only information listed for Holy Andromeda other than his or their location is an email address, nothing more, nothing less. Steam is a melting beauty, a nostalgia driven song with hints of Band Of Horses’ softly gliding alt country alongside its bittersweet alt rock angst which reminds me of The Lonely Forest (and their song Turn Of This Song And Go Outside, in particular). I’m quite sure this is actually a “blog premiere” of Steam, but sometimes, songs are too fantastically moving to care about little details like that. I can only hope we’ll learn more about the band or man who brings us this lovely tune, and perhaps many more to come.

Sleepercar is the long active alt country solo project of Jim Ward, once a member of At the Drive-In and a current member of Sparta. Today, Sleepercar released a new EP, Breathe & Count, and we get to stream steady strumming, earthy track Long Story Short. It’s a slow building, elegant song that feels more heartland and roots rock than country despite its twanginess. Sleepcar embarks on tour at the end of the month through Texas. Head over to Tembloroso to purchase the Breathe & Count EP.

The National’s Demons

April 8, 2013

Highly respected indie rockers The National debuted a new track today titled Demons, the second track and first official single off their coming new record Trouble Will Find Me, out on May 21 off 4AD. Demons is both rough and tender. It’s a beautiful, raw, introspective ballad. The despondent, moody, intricate track builds up very slowly with Matt Berninger’s deep baritone vocals, at times reminding me of Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst. I found myself liking the song a lot by the time it reached the end. Now, I can’t wait to hear more from their sixth studio album.

New She & Him!

March 8, 2013

Ready to be charmed? She & Him previewed a new, adorable tune, the jangly Never Wanted Your Love, which will be the first single on their next album Volume 3 (out on May 7 from Merge). It’s good to hear Zooey and M.Ward team up again. As great as their Christmas music is, some non-holiday tunes are much appreciated. Never Wanted Your Love is an endearing, foot tapping, cozy little pop song with that dash of alt country we love from She & Him.

OFFICIAL VID: Wilco (& Popeye) – Dawned On Me

January 25, 2012

This might be one of the coolest videos in awhile, or I’m just easily amused and have memories of watching Popeye the sailor man when I was a little kid. The video features a vintage cartoon version of Wilco rocking out with the likes of Popeye, Olive and Bluto. This is far too cool. Gimme some spinach! Though not always the most avid Wilco fan, I find myself liking this single a ton too. The single is off of their most recent album The Whole Love. I love this and I miss vintage cartoons!
