As I look forward to next year’s SXSW which is really just around the bend, I can’t help but recall one of my highlights from this year. Netherlands based Iranian artist Sevdaliza was already high on my charts of must catch musicians when I headed out to see her in Austin, but she certainly cemented herself as an all time favorite with her mesmeric set, both sensual and haunting. As you can imagine, I can’t wait for a debut album from Sevdaliza, and my excitement burns maddeningly great with the arrival of a twisting, winding new single named That Damaged Girl which samples Andy Stott and features A$AP Ferg on bristling guest vocals and co-writing duty. Those familiar with past Sevdaliza features may recognize That Damaged Girl as a new version of That Other Girl. This seething mass of sonic ecstasy is a barbed flurry of sinister seduction, and its YouTube stream comes with some wicked cool comic book renditions of the artists involved, too. Having witnessed Sevdaliza’s larger than life stage presence in person earlier this year, I can attest to how fitting this visual interpretation of this incredible artist really is. I look forward to re-visiting That Damaged Girl during the darkest, quietest hours before an eventual dawning of day.

The HAIM sisters dropped a video for the A$AP Ferg featuring version of My Song 5, and it’s one you won’t want to miss. The tongue in cheek clip is an homage to daytime television shows (guilty of watching my share of that back like a decade ago), plus it features a long list of awesome cameos, including but not limited to stints by Ezra Koenig, Big Sean, and Grimes, an addition that garners HAIM major bonus points, since Claire Boucher rules. I have to admit, when I first heard this song earlier this year, I deeply preferred the original, off HAIM’s fun and spectacular debut album Days Are Gone, but this hip hop infused version with A$AP Ferg has certainly grown on me plenty.

OFFICIAL VID: Bodega BAMZ – SAY AMEN (feat. A$AP Ferg)

March 19, 2013

The newest rising star out of the A$AP Mob crew to be lighting things up lately is A$AP Ferg. I’m starting to see his name around on the daily. Today brings a new track featuring him by Bodega BAMZ, titled SAY AMEN. Here’s the “deeply religious” video for the track. What really caught my attention about the tune is that the trap track samples none other than Clint Mansell’s amazing, regal, dramatic Lux Aeterna (from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack). I happen to LOVE that movie and that soundtrack with all my heart, as depressing as the film is. So, hey, that’s pretty cool. On an unrelated related note, Clint Mansell worked on the soundtrack for brand new dark film Stoker (with Emily Wells on a few of the trax, too).
