Erika M. Anderson, or EMA, first blew us away years ago with the raw emotion and cathartic power found within her music, and we’ve been fans of her since. Past Life Martyred Saints was one of our favorite albums of 2011. 2014′s The Future’s Void was an incredible journey, too. Come August 25th, EMA will be releasing her next album, Exile in the Outer Ring, and she’s been slowly revealing some choice indie rock cuts off the album. The latest such tune is a striking number named Down and Out. As on so many other EMA songs I love, there’s a wired intensity and tense tautness to the song despite what seems like a low, muffled quietude, or should I say, disquietude. That atmosphere and Erika’s breathy drawling vocals leave me in what feels like a state of suspension befitting of the song’s lyrics “what are you hoping for?”. Exile In The Outer Ring can be pre-ordered, here.
