Whew, it’s been a long day, but let’s finish up with something seriously wicked. Hard to believe, but Freak is a first original by new Philadelphia producer Ryan Farber. He wanted to create a weird bass house banger with unfamiliar sound combinations. Farber was inspired by the likes of Go Freek & Hybrid Theory, since he really digs their style of incorporating dubstep-style bass lines with deep house drum patterns. I can certainly hear all of that in Freak, which also triumphantly utilizes vocals from Rick James classic Superfreak. The chimera that Ryan Farber has strikingly created is, indeed, bizarre, but in such a thundering, acidic, fierce way. It’s oddly addictive and a booming, wild treat.
