I was quite happy last month to discover that my lovely city of San Francisco is home to a wonderful indie band named Split Screens, helmed by multi-instrumentalist Jesse Cafiero. Their debonair single Stand Alone had me swaying away to its breezy psych pop charm, fleshed out with plenty of airy synths, dreamy brass, and swooning autoharp. This week, Split Screens released their debut LP, Before The Storm, on Name Drop Swamp Records. They also marked the release with a stop motion music video for Stand Alone, and I really could not resist revisiting the track. The video was completely hand animated and edited by Jesse himself over the course of 5 months, utilizing hundreds of vintage collage cutouts ranging from the 1950’s and 1970’s. It’s amazing how meticulous of a project he’s completed. I always wondered about the sheer amount of patience required for stop motion animation work. The video pairs perfectly with gorgeous Stand Alone.
